Near Naked Cyclist Pedal Through Portumna
Ten Near Naked Cyclist will be stopping for lunch in Portumna on Saturday 20th August as part of their 560 mile cycling challenge. The cyclists will be facing one of their toughest challenges by taking on Male Cancer Awareness Campaign's East to West challenge, cycling from the east of the UK, Southend on Sea, to the west of Ireland, Galway. Not only will the cyclists be facing almost 100 gruelling miles in the saddle every day for 6 days, they will be doing so in near naked suits. The cyclists aim to raise awareness of male cancer and reduce the embarrassment factor associated with male cancer through the aid of the suits.

Patrick Cox, founder of Male Cancer Awareness Campaign said: "This challenge is tough, both mentally and physically. The suits are a bit silly in places, like men's bodies and aim to grab people's attention. We are hoping that the people of Portumna get behind us and show us support."

Ahead of the challenge, volunteer cyclist Rhod Perryman said: "This is my third year of doing the challenge, it's simply brilliant. You can not beat the feeling of cycling through towns and seeing people's reactions to the suit, they always generate a smile. I am looking forward to turning yet more people's heads this year"

The Near Naked Cyclists will be stopping for lunch on the final day of their challenge in Portumna around 1pm. The cyclists will be enroute to their final destination in Galway, where they started day 6 in Kilkenny.

Please visit www.malecancer.org for more information or www.ballsoutchallenge.org to take up your own challenge.

Male Cancer Awareness Campaign aims to reduce the embarrassment factor associated with male cancer. Men's lives are lost every year because they are too embarrassed to get themselves checked out. By completing the East to West challenge in Near Naked suits will raise awareness of male cancer and help reduce embarrassment levels.

Portumna Country Market
Country Markets is a co-operative network with a rich heritage bringing locally grown and crafted produce directly to consumers. The feel good factor of wanting to bring home the best food is something that is in all of us. We want to know our food is the best that our money can buy, is of the highest quality and is fresh, wholesome, tasty and healthy. When it is produced locally often by generations of the same family it is even more of a prize to savour and enjoy.

One place to find this type of food is in Country Markets Limited, a co-operative group of about 60 local food and craft markets that take place weekly right across the country. Artisan products on sale includes freshly baked breads, cakes and other sweet treats, scones and delicious home-made savoury dishes from pies and quiches to lasagnes that are made to the highest food standards. There is a wide range of wholesome jams, marmalades, chutney and salsas along with hone, seasonal preserves and craft items. Seasonal produce includes freshly picked salads, herbs, fruits, flowers, eggs and vegetables lovingly grown locally by families who take great pride in bringing their produce to local consumers in their own community. You will not find this food anywhere else and certainly not in a supermarket. The people behind Country Markets Ltd are local artisan bakers and farm families selling their own produced and handmade food directly to the consumer. They are Irish markets that have a long established heritage and tradition and play an increasingly important role in their local communities. Each branch market uses the distinctive Country Markets logo on its signage to differentiate it from other Markets.

Portumna Country Market was founded in 1994 - this market is the social hub of the town. Produce is locally grown and locally produced it includes vegetables, fruit, savouries, preserves, breads, (including spelt and gluten free), cakes, desserts, free range duck and hen eggs, crafts, shrubs etc, a friendly vibrant market open every Friday in the Town Hall from 8.30am to 12.30pm

Volvo Ocean Race
Frankie Leonard originally from Portumna has an enviable job as he has been selected as media crew member of Team Sanya, a Chinese entry in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race that concludes at the Galway City Docks.

His background as a sailor and professional cameraman will help him deliver the compelling story the Chinese, Irish and International fan base. Skipper of Team Sanya Mike Sanderson said "The role of the Media Crew Member is a significant one, especially for Team Sanya,". "Our aim is to attract the largest following of any team and Frankie will play a key role in achieving that objective. We have a potential 1.2 billion Chinese fans out there, as well as our Irish and international fans, and so we need to find a unique way to engage with them, inspire them to follow us and get them into the sport of sailing."

Frankie's personality as well as his technical abilities in film and photography means he is a perfect candidate for the job. He is supremely fit too from his rugby background and knows what it takes to work as part of a professional sports team. We wish him well and look forward to his reports over the next 12 months. Frankies Dad, Frank senior was Bank Manager with Bank of Ireland Portumna during the 1990s.
