Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc
Shane O`Rourke successfully completed the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 2011 on the last weekend of August, covering the 170km and 10,000m of elevation gain and loss in 45 hours. Running conditions were difficult due to thunderstorms and snow blizzards, with the start delayed until 11.30pm on Friday 26th August. 2300 runners started, with 1200 retiring due to fatique, with Shane finishing 1 hour inside the time limit.

Shane is fundraising for the Abalta School for Children with Autism, and would like to thank all who have contributed to this worthy cause. A Walk in the Forest Park will talk place soon to help with fundraising. Please continue to give your old mobile phones to David and Collete Flaherty to allow us to acquire an iPad for young Paul.

Mark T Burke - Milliner
Last weekend at Portumna Castle, Mark T Burke displayed some of his creations at the final day of Heritage week. The hats drew a great deal of attention from the 600 people that passed through the Castle on that Day. Without doubt Mark is a name that will be on Ladies lips for years to come if the creations we saw last weekend are anything to go by.

Mark T. Burke has seen his star rise in just over 12 months of being named Accessory Designer of the Year at the Irish Fashion Innovation Awards. His creative journey kick started with projects in his native Loughrea. He began working in costumes with Loughrea Youth Theatre a number of years ago and from there moved into working on various musicals around Galway. It was the production of "My Fair Lady" in Athlone and the "Ascot Hats" that cemented his love of millinery and set him on the road to where he is now.

After a short stint with Philip Treacy back in 2008 Mark realized this is what he wanted to be doing. Mark has nothing but respect for his fellow Galwegian, Philip - "He's top of his game. I'm not just saying that because he's from Galway but there's no comparison to him at all. Treacy most certainly revived the hat in the 1990's and brought it back to the catwalk."

Mark (24) graduated last year in Textile Design "I had originally wanted to study sculpture so it seemed only natural to marry the textiles with the 3-D process, hence, the millinery. Millinery always offers great space for creativity and to express yourself. There aren't many rules once it looks elegant and makes the wearer feel great!

Burke who works from his studio at his home in Loughrea has a strong focus on simple lines and shapes and attention to detail. 'There is no excuse for shabby stitching, I very rarely use glue and never use a sewing machine – everything is completely by hand"

Although relatively new to the fashion industry Mark already has a loyal following of fans both in Ireland and the UK and his designs have been spotted at Royal Ascot, Cheltenham, his native Galway Races, Buckingham Palace and most recently at the Royal Wedding of Zara Philips to Mike Tindall.

Teddy Bears' Picnic for Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin & CRY
The sun shone brightly in Portumna Forest on Sunday 22nd May last as over one hundred walkers joined the Forest Teddy, to raise funds for two very worthwhile charities: The Childrens' Medical & Research Foundation and CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young www.cry.ie). Jim Finn from Thurles walking group along with Fr. Tomás O' Connell, Cathedral Presbytery, Thurles and Jerry Quinn, Shanballyduff, set the pace for the serious walkers and undertook the 10 km walk with great gusto. The shorter, family friendly walk was very popular on the day and was enjoyed by all ages; many of the younger participants enjoyed the beautiful atmosphere of the forest from the comfort of their buggies! The Forest Teddy added greatly to the atmosphere on the day and posed for many photos with walkers.

The Children's Medical & Research Foundation provides much needed funds for continuing research and necessary high-tech equipment and facilities at Our Lady's Childrens' Hospital Crumlin. The large number of parents with their very young children who took part in and supported the walk was testament to the regard in which the work of Our Lady's Hospital is held.

In January 2007 a dedicated service for assessment of cardiac risk in the younger person and inherited cardiac disorders opened at the Adelaide & Meath Hospital, Tallaght, with the appointment of the Director, Dr. Deirdre Ward, Consultant Cardiologist. This service was developed in direct response to the lack of specialist services dedicated to the evaluation of young individuals and families at risk of sudden cardiac death. The untimely deaths of some high profile sports players has raised public awareness, both of the need for evaluation of family members if SCD (sudden cardiac death) has occurred in the past and of the possible association between some symptoms in young people and SCD. Information on the services provided at the CRY centre is available at (www.cry.ie).

As a result of the generous support received, each charity has received a cheque for € 2050.00. Sincere thanks to all who contributed to the success of the 2011 Teddy Bears' Picnic, looking forward to next year!
