Killeen Goat Mature Cheese
The winners of the second Irish Cheese Awards have been just announced at SHOP, Ireland's largest food & drink, retail & hospitality trade show taking place at the RDS Simmonscourt this week.

The Irish Cheese Awards took centre stage at the show, with the very best in Irish cheese producers vying for the top crown. However, it was Portumna based, Marion Roeleveld, with her Killeen Goat Mature, that wowed the judges to be named the Supreme Champion 2011. Marion also won Gold and Bronze in the Goats Milk category, Silver in the Flavour Added and Mature categories and Bronze in the Hard category. This is the second recent award for the cheese maker who also picked up 'Gold' in the category of 'Best Overall Goat's Milk Cheese' at the British Cheese Awards in Cardiff.

With 154 cheeses entered into this year's competition, the standard was extremely high. Hosted by Sheridan's Cheesemongers, Kevin Sheridan adds: "The quality of cheese being produced in Ireland at the moment is exceptional. Irish cheese is sweeping the board in both national and international competitions, and is now recognised across the globe for its superior taste and quality."

"We're delighted to have a genuine Irish Cheese awards event, and it's growing year-on-year, due to the thriving industry. There's a major opportunity for Irish cheese producers to export their products across the world, and recognition from awards events such as the Irish Cheese Awards is extremely important in endorsing the quality of the product."

"All of our award winners are very worthy and we would like to especially congratulate Marion on her Killeen Goat Mature - this cheese had something extra special about it and this is well deserved recognition," added Kevin.

Speaking on her win Marion Roeleveld from Killeen Farmhouse said: "To be crowned the Supreme Cheese at the Irish Cheese Awards at SHOP 2011 is a terrific recognition for the hard work that we've put into making Killeen Goat Mature the best it can be. We believe this win will have a positive impact on our brand, and open doors to retailers who appreciate quality Irish cheese."

Killeen Goat Mature is made from goat's milk produced from Killeen Farmhouse's own herd of goats. Produced in Killeen Farmhouse, Co. Galway, Marion Roeleveld has been making the Goat Mature cheese for six years.

The Begining: Marion came to Ballyshrule ten years ago where she met her husband Haske Knippels (who has been milking goats at the Millhouse since 1990). She grew up on a dairy farm, and worked at a cheesefarm in the Netherlands while she was in college (and it was through a college friend that Marion met Haske). When she moved in with him, she decided to make cheese.

It took a while to get started, but in 2004 she got the go ahead from the Dept of Agriculture. Marion uses her own goats milk and buys in cows milk from a farmer in Kylemore near Abbey. In the winter months she goes a bit further for her milk to a dairy farmer in Ballinasloe.

Four years ago Marion and Haske bought the farm where they are now, they built a new goat shed and cheeseplant there. They now milk 200 goats. The cheese business is growing a bit, so this spring they decided to employ somebody to help with the cheesemaking. From the outset they got very good support from the local shops, and restaurants in Galway city. It may have helped that we are the only Galway cheese makers.
