Firemen Retire
A fireman's life is something more than driving a red truck and spraying water on a blaze. He is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, always ready to risk his life to save others in times of disaster. The Portumna Firebrigade crew is like a big family always looking out for one another and as individuals they are well known in the community. Last week two of its long serving members, Billy Horrigan & Michael Moran retired. Between them they have over 50 years service with the fire brigade service. They have seen many changes over that period. Below is a brief resume of their years of service.

Billy Horrigan - Recruits Training Programme 1/12/1984, then joined Portumna Fire Service 1/02/1985. Driver Mechanic 24/03/1994. Retired 11/11/11.
Michael Moran - Recruits Training Programme 1/10/1986 then joined Portumna Fire Service 4/11/1986. Driver Mechanic 24/02/2004. Retired 11/11/11.

"Every fire person remembers their first call out and their first tragic event. We hope that all of the people who tragically lost their lives are in the highest place in Heaven, we also keep them in our prayers. Over the years we have had some "strange" times in the rescue service, one that comes to mind is the rescue of a deer that got entangled in the goal net at the rugby pitch. The deer was kicking like mad but the decision was made that we would make one run at the deer and physically hold him down, but the deer had other ideas and he kicked the life out of all of us, we were black and blue and sore after that event! We were called to a chimney fire in the Killeen area on the night of Hurricane Charlie, in those days we had a kind of plastic/rubber type coat, we climbed the roof to get to the chimney and we leaned in over the chimney pot to quench the fire, but when we were finished we had no fronts to our coats, they had stuck to the chimney breast. Thankfully things have improved in that respect, as regards equipment and personal protection.

One of the greatest achievements in their time in Portumna fire service was the raising of funds to put a rescue boat on the Shannon for the Portumnna area, we were both astonished by the generosity of the local community in raising funds for the boat. We would like to thank all the Fire Service Crew that both Michael & Billy served with over the years past & present. Billy & Michael would like to say a special word of thanks to their wives and families for all the help and understanding over the years. May we wish all in the fire service a safe & healthy career".

Active Retirement Association
Congratulations to our performing artists who entertained three hundred and fifty delegates present at the "Western A.R.A. Go On" festival held in the Salthill Hotel from the 27th to the 29th October. Our variety act started with the choir directed by Brid Porter, followed by our accomplished Sean Nos dancers Brid Donelan and Moira Concannon. Chris Smith on his harmonica held the audience silent with his rendering of Danny Boy. They did Portumna proud with their performances.

There were enjoyable tours to Moycullen glass factory, shopping in Standuns and lunch in the Park House Hotel. The next day a visit to Galway museum and other Galway sites, then on Thursday night a visit to the Dog track. Everyone enjoyed their trip and were very impressed with the Salthill Hotel and the attention of their staff.

Geraldine Mills, the writer and poet started our first writers group session last Monday morning. We all felt very enthused and motivated after our first session.

The drama group has an important meeting Thursday the 17th November.

Many thanks to Loughrea bowling club who invited some of our members to learn and play bowls with them.

Bogs Action Group
On Thursday 3rd November 2011 four Government officials met with representatives of the 900 families affected by the closure of Barroughter, Clonmoylan and Ardraigue Bogs. They visited the bogs and outlined the proposed ban on turf-cutting for these families.

According to Mr Jim Ryan, Wildlife Inspector, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), who drew up the plans for the proposed closure of our bogs, the water in the bogs will be contained in the bogs by blocking bridges and this will eventually flood the bogs and allow vegetation to grow. However, the surrounding farms are supporting farmers and their families for centuries and these farms will be liable to flooding, also. In years to come the surrounding farms will not be suitable for farming. These farms have been handed down through generations. Five farms in the Ardraigue area stand to lose 50 acres of arable land.

Farmers who own bogs have had the right to cut turf for family use for generations and with one stroke of a pen this right will be taken from some people forever. The turf cutting rights have been enjoyed by farmers for generations and it is hoped that the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Mr Jimmy Deenihan will see the light and de-designate the 3 bogs in East Galway.

Lorrha Variety Group Present "Widows Paradise"
On the last weekend in November Fri 25th, Sat 26th & Sun 27th, Lorrha Local Variety group will take to the stage in the hilarious comedy "Widows Paradise" which was written by Belfast born playwright Sam Cree.

Widows Paradise is a 3 Act comedy set in the 1960's. The action of the play takes place in a "luxury" caravan with 5 ladies embarking on a "strictly women only" holiday. A subsequent case of "mistaken caravan identity" sees the "Widows Paradise" thrown into disarray with the arrival of the real owners of the caravan - men!! Chaos ensues.

Lorrha VG are a young and very enthusiastic group. This is the kind of play that caters for everyone-it's a "King" of comedies and Lorrha will do it proud.
