The Portumna Retirement Village 'Staff Person of the Year Award' was announced on Saturday night. Residents, relatives, and staff submitted over 120 nomination papers in recent weeks. The award winner was John Smith. John has worked at the retirement village for just over three years and in that time has established himself as a firm favourite with both residents and staff. Congratulating John, Tony Williams, owner of Portumna Retirement Village recognised the tremendous respect that people have for John and paid tribute to John's professionalism, his caring nature, and his unstinting commitment to residents and his colleagues.

The Army Band of Western Brigade visits Ballinakill N.S.
Ballinakill N.S. were proud to play host to The Army Band of The Western Brigade on November 22nd last.

The Army No. 4 Band was formed in 1936 and has been located at Costume Barracks Athlone since that time. The Band's numerical title was later changed to a territorial style; thus the Army No. 4 Band became The Band of the Western Command. Its current title, The Band of 4 Western Brigade, dates from a re-organisation of the Defence Forces in 1997.The Band has the distinction, unique among the Irish military bands, of having served a six-month tour as part of a United Nations mission (UNFICYP – Cyprus) in 1965. During this tour they played at over one hundred events for the Greek and Turkish communities on the island.

The Band services a large area ranging northwards from Westmeath to Donegal and westwards to Galway and Mayo. It performs a wide range of Military, State and Civilian Engagements each year and is recognised as being an integral part of the cultural life of the West of Ireland.

Following an invitation by Gerard Fahy Principal of Ballinakill N.S., The Band of 4 Western Brigade, under the baton of Cpt. Fergal Carroll, entertained a very receptive audience of parents and children of Ballinakill, Drim and Moyglass N.S. The vast repertoire of tunes ranged from well-known classics to modern film scores. Various Brass and Reed instruments were demonstrated expertly. A musical interlude featuring the girls and boys of Ballinakill N.S Band followed and all were treated to a selection of rousing jigs and reels. Captain Fergal Carroll, noted that it was a most appropriate visit to a parish that had such a rich history in Irish music. This wonderful performance was followed by a meal prepared by Siobhan Casement, Ailish Broderick and Anne Dunne from teaching staff of Ballinakill N.S.

Active Retirement Association
We are all looking forward to our Christmas Social which is starting punctually at 6 pm on the 15th December in our usual meeting room in Portumna Retirement Village, commencing with an Ecumenical Service and coral celebration then, moving to O'Meara's restaurant for our Christmas dinner, followed by music, fun and dance.

Bowling: The equipment for indoor bowling is arriving before Christmas so we are looking forward to an extra activity in the New Year. We are very thankful to Tony Williams and the staff of the retirement village for providing us with storage facilities for this bulky equipment and the comforts we enjoy in the social room each Thursday for our weekly meetings. We also send a big thank you to Loughrea bowling club members for all their assistance in helping us to both learn the game of bowling and ordering the most suitable equipment.

Portumna Golf Club in Golf Digest Ireland Top 100
Portumna Golf Club entered the GDI (Golf Digest Ireland) top 100 for the first time in 2010 and moves up a further eight places this year to inch even closer to the top fifty. A recent upgrade to the green complexes has brought recognitation to the tranquil estate course that boasts some of the finest inland topography in Ireland. Water rears its head only once(the tough par five 17th), meaning that the wonderful naturally shaped golf holes are given room to breathe.

This County Galway golfing gem is such a relaxing place to play that even the local herd of deer seem interested in how you might be scoring. The Committee and members hope we will get below the 50 mark next year and celebrate our Centenary in style.

Break in at Heathlawn Animal Sanctuary
On the night of the 10 Dec 11 the Heathlawn animal sanctuary was broken into and 5 of our dogs were taken.

On the morning of the 11th one of the staff arrived to find the window of the staff area smashed in and the two dogs that reside in there visibly shaken. They then realized some of the equipment including the microchip scanner (which is a very expensive and important tool in our line of work) and donations were missing along with the supply of leads collars and muzzles. On further looking realized Kanute the male husky and Moony the injured female lurcher were not in there pens and Rascal,(injured) Curly and Patty three of our terriers were also missing from their rooms.

All the staff and volunteers are devastated at the loss of our dogs, the equipment and money can all be replaced eventually but finding the dogs, some of which were receiving medical care after surgery are our main priority.

The fear now is not only for the missing dogs welfare but the ill effect it has had on the resident dogs most of which have come from very abusive backgrounds and this attack on their home has left them feeling unsafe and terrified, some of them are refusing to eat or even come out of their beds.

We ask anyone with any information to contact the authority's and everyone to please keep a lookout for our dogs.
