Arts Group Review of 2011
Portumna Arts Group and Shorelines Arts Festival committee would like to wish members, sponsors, friends and supporters a very Happy Christmas. 2011 was a very productive year for the Arts in Portumna with a very successful Shorelines Arts Festival in September. With the Pen Pushers writing away and Omna in top voice, the local Arts scene is alive and well. From last year's Christmas Concert in the Shannon Oaks to the Irish Writer's Peregrine Readings, from Workhouse Project and drama events to the Nicholas Treacy Recitation competition, interest in the arts is certainly growing. The annual Jan 6th Arts Dinner will take place this year in The Ferry Inn and members and supporters are all welcome. For more info on this annual gathering, call 087 2931055.

Hurling Stars Return to their Roots
On Monday 19th, Tynagh N.S. had the honor and pleasure of welcoming back some of their past pupils who were on the Tynagh Abbey-Duniry Minor team that won the County Final in November. Three past pupils were also on the All-Ireland winning Galway Minor Team, Paul Killeen, Padraig Breheny and Shane Moloney. Trainers and mentors came along and offered some words of advice to the children of Tynagh N.S., the hurling stars of the future! David Blake, Captain of the winning Junior C team also attended and had a quick chat with the children. They brought the Irish Press Cup (All Ireland Minor Cup), The Cross of Cashel (All Ireland U-21 trophy), the Galway County Minor Cup and The Junior C Plaque to display to the children.

Christmas Day Swim
The annual Christmas Day Swim took place in the swimming area on Lough Derg Portumna. This was the first time in over 2 years that the swimmers could jump in from one jetty and swim to the other a distance of 50mtrs as the Shannon was frozen in 2009 & 2010. There was a total of 24 swimmers, a great crowd came down to support them and meet old friends. The Shannon waters were extremely choppy and cold with the spray wetting many of the onlookers. The water temperature was 5 degrees the air temperature 10 degrees. The monies raised this year are going to the Tennis Club. Sean Fahy 8 yrs old from Killimor and John Claffey 10 yrs old from Portumna were the youngest participants. The Red Cross and members of the local firebrigade water rescue unit were on hand just in case someone got in to difficulty. The Tennis Club committee were also there to lend a hand collecting money. Theresa Walker from the Ferry Inn provided hot punch for anyone feeling the cold. A special thanks to the Lord Mayor Donie O Meara who makes an appearance every year dressed in a festive outfit. Finally a big thank you to Ann Touhy who makes sure that all the swimmers are safe when they enter the water.

Sign Out Youth Project
To celebrate a very active and successful 2011, Sign Out Youth Project would like to invite all its volunteers and committee members to a 'Building on Success' Evening on Monday January 9th at 7pm. Flan Spaight of Sixth World Community Development and Lecturer with NUIG will facilitate the evening which promises to be light-hearted, informative, social and fun.

Pauric O Rourke
As the winter closes in, Pauric O Rourke is spending his final days at Pine Valley for this season. It has been an amazing 7 months for Pauric – the tall PGA Professional from Portumna Golf Club he learned more at the number one course in the World than he ever thought he could on how to run the perfect golf operation. From running Golf Tournaments, Retail, Lessons, Agronomy and at the heart of it all the best customer service possible.

"Despite Pine Valley offering one of the best experiences in golf everyone here is trying to get better from the Chef to the caddy master. Pauric went on to state: "for us as the golf pros we will spend the winter trying to see where we made mistakes during the year and put systems in place so this does not happen again"

A quick up date on the course here at Pine Valley, "play is pretty much finished here for the winter. When the final group finished last Friday work had already started on two of our greens a slight change required to both greens in order to get more pin positions on each green. The new greens are being done under the expertise of world renowned designer Tom Fazio. (We are in good hands). The season will start here again in early April."

For me I guess I can call myself a snowbird, I am migrating south for the winter. My destination is the Bonita Bay club in Naples Florida, where I will be working as a golf consultant giving them advice on how to run their operation better, there are five courses at Bonita with 1200 members. It is a private members club with most members living on the course. It should be a great chance to play some golf in good weather and maybe fit in some tournaments. I am planning a trip with 11 members and hope to include my home club Portumna on the trip.
