Portumna & District Lions Club
We'd like to thank everyone for their support in collecting over 500 eye glasses. These eye glasses were collected from the district over the month of October and shall go to help others less fortunate than ourselves. Should people still have prescription glasses they no longer need, there is a box for same in Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy, Portumna all year round.

Volunteering with Ireland Reaching Out
We are looking for volunteers who can work on the computer (mostly Excel) doing the following:

* maintaining the marketing database (excel)
* answering queries, updating our website www.irelandxo.com

If you have some spare time and are comfortable working with the Internet and Excel, we'd love to hear from you! Tel: (091) 842013.

New Online Store for HighJinks Portumna
We are all aware that the internet has changed the way consumers interact with the rest of the world. However, many small businesses and retailers are possibly not fully aware of how significant an impact the internet actually has? For example, an independent survey carried out by iReach Market Research as far back as 2009 made some of the following observations on the profile of the Irish internet user:
  • 69% of Irish people are regular internet users.
  • Ireland is ranked 10th in the world for online purchasing.
  • 50% of Irish consumers look for advice online before making a purchase.
  • €1700 was the average online spend with €300 million worth of goods purchased during that time period.
With the increasing popularity of high speed broadband, free Wifi access and internet-compatible smart phones, it stands to reason that the phenomenon of internet shopping is set to explode!

Bearing all this in mind, High Jinks in Portumna is delighted to announce the launch of its new online store, www.highjinks.ie. Reaction to the new site has been very positive particularly from time-strapped working mothers. Goods can be viewed and securely purchased online using proven encrypted payment methods such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal. Delivery to the Rep. of Ireland is guaranteed within 2-3 days. In keeping with a "shop local" focus, Mary and Richard (the owners) employed the services of Eva Collins from www.meerkat.ie to design the new site. Why not check it out for yourself? There are lots of excellent opening offers with plans to introduce more as the new Spring stock starts to arrive.

O'Meara's Restaurant
O'Meara's the well known restaurant on Clonfert Ave. is under new management. The husband and wife team of Heather Slevin and Alan Dower (Cloughjordan) who have many years experience in the catering trade have taken the day to day running of this well known eatery. They open from 9am to 10pm they also do takeaway lunches etc and you may also prebook lunch if you are on a tight lunch schedule. We wish them well with this new venture.

Table Quiz - Bogs Action Group Fundraiser
The Barroughter and Clonmoylan Bogs Action Group are holding a table quiz in McDonaghs, Kilcorban, Tynagh on Friday night January 20th at 9pm. A table of 4 is just €20 and a raffle will be held on the night with many great prizes. A prize will also be given for the best score from a table of 4 young people.

The proceeds of the night will be used to fight the campaign to save the Shannon Bog (Barroughter) and Clonmoylan Bog from confiscation by the State. Families who have turf banks in these two bogs and those who get turf for cooking and heating are asked to support this fundraising event in order to ensure that the present action campaign to save both bogs is successful. Present and future generations in our area must be allowed to cut and harvest turf on their legally owned turf banks.

All families are now asked to support the turf cutters action campaign. All kinds of help is now needed from everybody to save the right to cut turf. Offer your help today. Follow the action campaign on the Barroughter and Clonmoylan Action Group Facebook.

Portumna Town FC
Portumna Town FC has been in existence since 2006 and is registered with the Midland Schoolboys/girls League. It currently has its highest number of children registered in any single season, at 165. The club would like to thank all the parents/guardians who have registered their children and hope that they will remain with the club for many years to come. The youngest age group registered is U7 which accommodates kids born in 2005 and the oldest age group is the U17's, the majority of whom have been with the club since they were playing as U11's.

Due to the success of the club, each year has resulted in the registration of an extra team at a higher age group. As it can be very difficult to secure the voluntary services of coaches for so many different age groups, the club acknowledge and are very appreciative of the services and commitment of all the coaches, both past and present.

Although only in existence for five seasons, the club have already won a number of honours; Best Small MSL Club 2006/07; U12 MSL Shield Winners 2007/08; U-10 MSL Futsal Champions 2009/10; U-10 West League Champions 2010/11; U-10 MSL Cup Winners 2010/11; U15 MSL Shield Winners 2010/11. The club has also over the years been represented by a number of players in the Emerging Talent programme run by the Midlands Schoolboys/girls League.

At the recent AGM a number of new Officers were elected to the positions of Chairman, Secretary, Asst Secretary, and Asst Treasurer. All the contact names and numbers for the Officers and coaches in the club can be found on the club website www.portumnatown.com. along with times and training slots for the different age groups. Fixtures and results of all the games can also be accessed through the website, together with match reports.

The Astroturf facilities are proving very popular and the club would like to thank all those who travel from near and far to rent the pitch each week. Not only has the Astroturf proved to be a major asset for the club itself but it is also a resource which is used to great benefit by other clubs and organisations. Portumna Town FC is delighted to be in a position to share such a wonderful facility with the Community. The rental income is vital for the club's survival and everybody's custom is much appreciated and hopefully will continue in the coming years. The Astroturf is also available to hire for childrens' birthday parties. Bookings may be made by 'phoning 087-6954487.

Overall the goodwill and support of all the people in Portumna and the surrounding areas has been invaluable in the success of the club to date, none more so than the residents living in the immediate vicinity. The Club would like to take this opportunity of wishing everybody a peaceful and prosperous 2012.
