Three Priests - 150 Years of Priesthood
In the year 2010, 3 priests in the Clonfert Diocese celebrated 150 years of priesthood between them. Fr. Brendan Lawless P.P. Portumna was ordained in 1970, Fr. Sean Lyons P.P. Duniry was ordained in 1960 & Fr. Pat Naughten was ordained in 1950. Between them they have amassed 150 years of Priestly duties and they are still going strong.

Fr Brendan Lawless was ordained in 1970 for the S.M.A. community as a missionary to Africa. For the next 18 years he served in the diocese of Ilorin in Nigeria where his bishop was another Clonfert man, Bishop Bill Mahoney from Derrybrien. Brendan was a native of Kilconieron parish between Loughrea and Athenry and he returned to work in Clonfert in 1987 serving in Fahy & Quansboro for a few months before being appointed to Cappataggle. He became Adm and later P.P. of Ballinakill in 1991 and came to Portumna just ten years ago during the World Cup of 2002.

Fr Sean Lyons: On the 19th June 1960 Fr. Sean Lyons was one of three young men ordained priests for the Clonfert diocese. At the time Clonfert had an excess of priests so Fr Lyons had to go abroad to Vancouver, Canada for an appointment. On his return a year later, he taught in St Molaise's, Portumna. He later served as a curate in Attymon, before coming as curate in Abbey and a teacher in Mercy College, Woodford 40 years ago in 1970. He is now Parish Priest of Duniry.

Fr Pat Naughten: A native of Menlough he was ordained in 1950 and served in Kildare, Fahy, Killeen for 23 years and Parish Priest of Woodford from 1983 until 2006. He stayed on as pastor and still does pastoral work in the parish.

These three priests were together last Monday in Portumna to concelebrate the Mass for Mr Brendan Murray who passed away over the weekend.
