Job Vacancies at The Irish Workhouse Centre
SE Galway IRD has two vacancies, one full time and one part time, for people to work as tour guides at the Irish Workhouse Centre and to assist with various aspects of the Workhouse Project. Training Programme for Volunteers Engaged in Youth Work
The Starting Out Programme has been developed by the National Youth Council of Ireland to standardize training of volunteers working with young people throughout the country.

The programme is being piloted across the country with Sign Out Youth Co as one of the youth groups to be included in this initial training. The Programme runs for 6 weeks commencing Wed 22nd Feb from 7pm to 9.30 pm in Sign Out Youth Cafe. The training is open to everyone over 18, no previous qualifications necessary and is funded by Galway Rural Development and is free of charge to all participants.

If you are already involved in youth work, would like to find out more, are a parent, or want to enhance a course programme then this training is for you!!. The sessions will cover topics such as - Information about youth work and Its work with young people - Factors that impact on a young person's life - The importance of acknowledging young people's strengths - Roles and responsibilities - Policies and procedures. Irish Writers' Centre
Spring Peregrine Readings Thursday, March 8th Church of Ireland, Portumna 7.30pm Adm: €5. Featuring readings and discussion with writers Tom MacIntyre, Eoin McNamee and Orflaith Foyle. We are delighted to host our third reading event organized from the Irish Writers' Centre and your support at this reading will enable us to feature more literary events in Portumna.

Tom MacIntyre: A member of Aosdána, lives in Cavan and is a wellknown playwright (The Gallant John Joe, The Great Hunger, Cuirt An Mhean Oiche, Good Evening, Mr Collins), poet (Encountering Zoe, Stories of the Wandering Moon, A Glance Will Tell you and A Dream), prose writer (Dance the Dance, The Harper's Turn, The Charollais). A colourful writer not to be missed.

Eoin McNamee: A native of Co Down, Eoin writes for adults and children. His novels include Orchid Blue, Resurrection Man, The Blue Tango and the John Creed series of crime novels of which The Sirius Crossing won the CWA Steel Dagger.

Orflaith Foyle: Now living in Galway, Orflaith has lived in many countries and is a writer of prose ( Belios, Revenge, Somewhere in Minnesota) and poetry ( Red Riding Hood's Dilemma). "She is a true original, a writer of great gifts, immensely compelling and memorable"


Portumna Pen Pushers
Portumna's writer's group, Portumna Pen Pushers meet on alternate Thursdays from 7.30-9.30pm in An Gairdin. Writers of poetry and prose are welcome. This peer-led group focuses on encouraging and nurturing new and existing writers. For more info call 087 293 1055.


Hospice Coffee Evening
Many thanks to all who supported the coffee evening and cake sale in The Community Centre, Eyrecourt on 2nd December 2011. The amount raised was €1,750, for which the Hospice are very grateful.


Tennis Club Commended for Fund Raising Effort
The Tennis Club have organised a quiz, which will take place in the Boathouse on February 24th at 8.00pm. The committee was delighted with the proceeds from the recent Christmas swim. The money collected was well over 1400. Thanks to all the swimmers who took part in the Christmas swim and to the crowd who supported the swimmers on that particular morning.

The committee are in the process of organising a concert scheduled to take place in the Town Hall on Friday 23rd March at 8.00pm and all proceeds from the concert will help defray the cost of the tennis club's refurbishment. A rehearsal for the concert will take place on March 9th from 7.00 to 9.30 pm. The fund raising success to date is due to a very dedicated committee who are all completing several tasks on several fronts on a weekly basis.


John Muldoon wins Player of the Month Award
Portumna man John Muldoon, experienced back rower, has been honoured as the Connacht Player of the Month award winner. The exclusive award is presented in association with Hartmanns Jewellers and Tag Heuer watches and is presented to Connacht players who have displayed exceptional leadership and ability both on and off the field over the course of the month.

John Muldoon received the award for December following his exceptional performances in Connacht's back-to-back Heineken Cup pool matches against Gloucester as well as his application and attitude during training. John went on to thank Hartmanns and Tag Heuer for sponsoring the award and said "I hope we can build on our recent success and turn some of our great performances into great victories during the rest of the season."

Na Calai Looking for Volunteer Computer Tutors
Galway Rural Development in partnership with Age Action provide "Getting Started" Computer Classes to Older People in the community. Classes are currently underway Tuesday, 2 - 3.15 p.m., Wednesday, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Thursday 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. These classes are for beginners and are kindly delivered by a number of volunteers in the area.

Na Calai are looking for more volunteer tutors who are comfortable with basic computing and are committed and understanding of the needs of a new learner. If you are available at any of the above times for three to six weeks and are interested in helping with the programme, please call Na Calai on 090 9741887 and ask to speak to Frances or Catriona.


Portumna GAA
There was no winner of last Sat nights lotto jackpot worth €7400. The numbers drawn were 11 12 19 28. Five people matched three numbers Pauline Carty, Martin Donoghue, Sinead Salmon, Shane Madden Coolpora & Kevin Burke. They each receive €20. This Sat nights lotto will be worth €7500.


Poetry in Horan's Bar
The Maple Poetry Group, Portumna Pen Pushers and all interested in listening, reading or writing poetry invite all along to Horan's Corner House Bar on Thursday, Feb 16th at 8.30pm for an evening of poetry. As it is the week of St Valentine's Day, you are encouraged to bring along a love poem to read, sing a love song or simply just love to attend!

The AGM of Portumna Arts Group will take place on Wednesday, Feb 15th in Sign Out Youth Café at 8.00pm. Killimor GAA
Last weeks lotto numbers were 15,24,25 and 30. The jackpot was €3,900. The 5 lucky dip winners (€20) were Donal Forde, Eilis Finnerty, Seamus & Teresa McEvoy, Sean Moran and Michael Kirwan. Next week's jackpot is €4,000 which will be held in the Hurlers Rest.

GasLand - 'fracking' Film at An Gairdin
Film showing GasLand at An Gairdin Portumna Sunday 12th February 7.00pm. GasLand explores the environmental consequences of the new mining technique known as 'fracking' or hydraulic fracturing, currently being considered for parts of Ireland. GasLand has been described as one of the most effective environmental films of recent times and is being viewed by many local communities around the country.

Bogs Action Group
Barroughter & Clonmoylan Bogs Action Group sincerely thank all those who attended their recent table quiz in McDonaghs, Kilcorban, Tynagh and the many individuals and business who donated spot prizes. Amount raised €2,343. The proceeds of the night will be used to fight the campaign to save the Shannon Bog, Clonmoylan Bog and Ardraigue Bog from confiscation by the state.
