Ireland Reaching Out Wins Major National Award for "Best Community Project"
The East Galway-based national Diaspora project won the top prize for "Best Community Project" in the country on Saturday night at the prestigious LAMA (Local Authority Members Awards) in Dublin. Cited for its originality, popularity among parishes and volunteers, and its potential to scale across the country, the award was presented by Minister for the Environment, Mr Phil Hogan and award host Miriam O'Callaghan. Before a packed star-studded black-tie audience of County and City Managers and local Authority officials from across the country, the award was received on behalf of the project by Parish Liaison Officer, John Joe Conwell and the Major of County Galway, Moggie Maher.

Speaking after the award John Joe Conwell stated that "the simplicity of the Ireland Reaching Out project is powerful. Rather than trace the Diaspora of the nation as a whole across the world, parishes across Ireland are now retracing their own Diaspora which is a direct benefit to them and the long term development of their communities. The keen interest being shown by local authorities across the country this evening is testament the project's natural appeal to local volunteers and communities".

Ireland Reaching Out Project Chairman Mike Feerick paid tribute to the support of the Galway County Council stating that its support had been critical to the development of the project. He also paid tribute to the work of volunteer parish communities across County Galway for leading the way nationally in the development of the project – which he added was still in its early stages.

Guidance Counsellor
Just about now students and adults alike may be thinking of what courses they would like to do at third level and may need a helping hand! Sally Gibb is an excellent Counsellor and it might be worth your time to contact her. As she says in her opening address she is a "Qualified Guidance Counsellor specializing in Career Guidance for all ages."

For Senior Cycle Students she covers, Subject Choice, CAO Applications and Change of Mind, PLC Applications. Part of each session comprises of motivation and study skills and techniques.

For those interested in studying abroad, Sally can assist in the submission of UCAS applications and provide information on USA application routes.

For Junior Cycle and Transition Year Students she can talk them and their parents, if required, through Subject Choice, the Points System and Higher Education Options. An awareness of these matters can make the transition from Second Level to Third Level Education easier.

She is registered in Psychometric Testing and can administer tests including Differential Aptitude Test's and Career Interest Inventories which can assist in the career decision-making process.

The decision to return to education can be a daunting one for some adults. Mature student applications may require supplementary information and/or specific entry tests and this is a process that I can guide a client through.

Choosing an effective Postgraduate Course can be difficult as Postgraduate studies are more specific and yet varied. I work with my clients to formulate an achievable Career Plan.
I am based in Portumna, Co. Galway and Rathcabbin/Lorrha, Co. Tipperary. Phone 086 1909287 or e-mail sally.gibbs@hotmail.com for an appointment.

Nursing Home Fair Deal Scheme
At an area meeting held recently at Portumna Retirement Village, concern was expressed at the pressure on local families caused by the length of delay that one must wait for admission to a nursing home caused by the lack of funding under the HSE Fair Deal Scheme. With a limited national budget, the current waiting time for funding is approx three months. This has led to older people who have been determined by a hospital consultant to be in need of long term nursing care not getting to access to care.

Nursing homes all over the county, including Portumna Retirement have vacant beds, while older people in need of care struggle in the community. Under the Fair Deal scheme (introduced in 2009), once approved, a resident pays 80% of their weekly income and the HSE funds the balance of the fee. A resident can choose to live at any nursing home in the country for the exact same cost. This allows a resident to choose a nursing home based on their preference rather than finances and they also have the freedom to move from one nursing home to another should they choose.

Portumna Tidy Towns
Now that Spring is here, we have started to do clean ups around the town. We started at the field opposite Aldi and would like to take this opportunity of thanking Aldi as they have been very co-operative with their own litter control and have recently given the shrubbery a makeover which looks great! Other areas, are the Yew Walk, the playground and the road leading to the Rugby pitch.

Some of our volunteers are out during the week, usually morning from 9.30am to 11.30am two days a week, so if you have hours to spare, please join us, The Saturday crew start at 8.00 am and usually finish about 10.00 am. We would like to thank a very enthusiastic volunteer who has been out during the year, early in the morning, doing clean ups in the town centre. It has made a great difference! Those of you who do your own clean ups in your neighbourhoods, please keep up the good work. It all helps!
