Eyrecourt Twinning Group to host Tullamore Gospel Choir
Eyrecourt Twinning Group are hosting the Tullamore Gospel Choir in St. Brigid's Church, Portumna on the 9th March at 8.30pm. This is the best choir in Ireland with 70 members who range in age from 6 to 70 years. The Musical Director is internationally renowned singer/songwriter Brendan Keeley. A night not to be missed. Eyrecourt Agriculture Show - AGM
Eyrecourt agriculture show will hold its annual AGM on Friday 2nd March at 9pm in Eyrecourt social centre. All are welcome to attend. Upcoming events for the year ahead which will include election of new officers, planting of beech trees and discussion of annual show which will be held on Saturday 15th of September @11 am.

Portumna and District Lions Club
Portumna and District Lions Club are delighted to announce they have received their first grant on the Senior Alert Scheme in which has helped 18 individual people within our community to feel safer within their home. This is only the first of many more we hope that we can help, stated Lisa OBrien; Portumna & District Lions Club president. To be able to administer the scheme has been a great eye opener and to know that personal alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, fire alarms and internal/external lighting can be provided is another step to supporting our community. We would like to thank Na calai who have been a tremendous support for us and the Public Health Nurses.


Good Friday Table Quiz
Test your knowledge on current affairs, sports, film, politics, music and lots more at the annual Good Friday Table Quiz which will take place this year in The Clonwyn House, Brendan Street. Table of four €40; Students €20. This bumper quiz always promises to to a great night for all the family and quiz enthusiasts offering all levels of questions on a wide variety of topics. Mark the calendars - Fri 6th April at 8pm.


Safe Tractor Skills for Teenagers
With the ever increasing numbers of Farm Accidents in our rural community, Sign Out Youth Co in association with the Farm Relief Services and Garda Traffic Corp are offering a one day Safe Tractor Skills for Teenagers on Wednesday 11th April (during the Easter break). The aim of this workshop is to create a safety awareness amongst teenagers working with tractors. The training programme is designed for the use of tractor/machinery within the farm. This programme piloted in Sign Out in 2010 was nominated for the Leading Lights Awards and has successfully run in other clubs throughout Co Galway.

The day will run from 9.30am to 4pm commencing in Sign Out Youth Cafe with a presentation and discussion on farm safety, safety checks and safe driving. Followed by a practical driving session in a specially prepared course, taking in reversing, hitching tractors to other implements, PTO safety, operating trailed machinery, setting up a good driving position and safe driving. This workshop is open to members (€20) and non members (€25) of Sign Out Youth Cafe, both male and female, between the ages of 14 and 17 years. A Certificate will be presented at the end of the day. Portumna GAA
Lotto: There was no winner of last Saturday nights lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 19 20 21 24. No one matched three numbers. Donation to Social Services and St Dympnas.

Schools Win: Congratulations and well done to Portumna Community school on winning the Connacht Colleges senior hurling title after a bridge of 50 years. It is an historic occasion for all involved. Well done to our own club players Oisin Royston, Owen Treacy, Padraig Muldoon, Ronan O Meara, Colin Burke, Sean Tuohy, Conor Barry and James Coughlan who did the club proud last Saturday.


Portumna Camogie Club
There will be a presentation of county medals to Portumna Camogie Club's under 14 and Intermediate 2011 county winners on Friday the 9th March 2012 at 7pm, in Portumna Town Hall. Congratulations to the players, coaches and managers of both teams on their success. There will also be an opportunity for annual registration with the club on the night from 6pm.


Table Quiz - Gortanumera Development Association Fundraiser
A Table Quiz in aid of Gortanumera Development Association will again be held in O'Meara's, Portumna, on Friday 16 March at 9 p.m.. The Quiz will comprise of tables of four, with questions for young and old, for adults and students, for town and country, for all four provinces and beyond!

The table prizes will again be generous. Raffle prizes are kindly sponsored by local businesses. You will have plenty of chances to win, through luck and through your general knowledge genius! Get your St. Patrick's Weekend off to a winning start. Please arrive early. O'Meara's could barely contain the numbers entering in previous years. Spring Peregrine Readings
Irish Writers' Centre presents the Spring Peregrine Readings, Thursday, March 8th in Church of Ireland, Portumna at 7.30pm Adm: €5. Featuring readings and discussion with writers Tom MacIntyre, Eoin McNamee and Orflaith Foyle.

Portumna Arts Group is delighted to host our third reading event organized from the Irish Writers' Centre and your support at this reading will enable us to feature more literary events in Portumna.

Tom MacIntyre: a member of Aosdána, lives in Cavan and is a wellknown playwright (The Gallant John Joe, The Great Hunger, Cuirt An Mhean Oiche, Good Evening, Mr Collins), poet (Encountering Zoe, Stories of the Wandering Moon, A Glance Will Tell you and A Dream), prose writer (Dance the Dance, The Harper's Turn, The Charollais). A colourful writer not to be missed.

Eoin McNamee: A native of Co Down, Eoin writes for adults and children. His novels include Orchid Blue, Resurrection Man, The Blue Tango and the John Creed series of crime novels of which The Sirius Crossing won the CWA Steel Dagger.

Orflaith Foyle: Now living in Galway, Orflaith has lived in many countries and is a writer of prose (Belios, Revenge, Somewhere in Minnesota) and poetry (Red Riding Hood's Dilemma). "She is a true original, a writer of great gifts, immensely compelling and memorable"


Art Exhibition in Portumna Library
As part of the East Galway Art Trail, there will be an exhibition in Portumna Library on Wednesday 7th March @ 7.30 pm. Michaela McCarroll will be displaying her work. All welcome!


Liverpool Legends to visit Birr
Liverpool Legends are coming to Birr on 1st April to play a game against a group of guys from Birr to raise funds for our local schools. The match is taking place in Frank O'Connell Park, Woodfield, Birr at 2.30pm. Tickets for the match are €10 per person. They are on sale in the Liverpool Legends office in Birr every Saturday or from Charmaine King on 086 1080174.

At 8.30pm on the night of the match there will be a table quiz in the Co Arms Hotel, Birr. Tables are €60 for adults and €40 for secondary school students. 4 people at each table plus you get one footballer for 2 rounds of the quiz. This is subject to availability and is available to the first 66 tables booked.

On 16th March we have John Aldridge coming to our shop in Birr to help promote the game and autograph match tickets sold on the day.

The provisional lineup of Liverpool players includes John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Ronnie Whelan, Alan Kennedy, Jason McAteer, Phil Babb, Phil Neal, Gary Gillespie, Michael Thomas, Bob Boulder and John Wark.

The event is being held as a fundraiser to raise much needed funds for the schools in our parish. There are 7 schools in Birr Parish and all were invited to participate. The 4 that chose to run with the project are St Brendan's Community School, Mercy Primary School, Carrig NS and Killeen NS.


South East Galway Archaeological & Historical Society
South East Galway Archaeological & Historical Society will hold Lectures over the Spring season. On Tuesday March 27th a lecture will be given by Dr. Conor McNamara entitled; The Irish Republican Army at War: the evolution of guriella warfare in County Galway, 1920-21. The venue is Donie O'Meara's Restaurant, Portumna at 8.30pm. Dr. Conor McNamara works for Notre Dame University, Irish Studies Department and is a native of Athenry, County Galway. His study of the War of Independence in County Galway will shortly be published by Four Courts Press.

National Tree Week at An Gairdin
The theme for National Tree Week (4th - 10th March) this year is: "Trees-Our Past, Our Present, Our Future". An Gairdin, Portumna, will host a workshop on Native Trees from Monday to Friday at 11.00am-12.00pm each day. We will learn about Native Trees and plant a Native Hedgerow. The workshops are open to all.


St. Patrick's Day Parade
This year's parade will take place on Saturday 17th March at 1pm leaving from the Mart in Domnick Street and following the usual route up Clonfert Avenue.
