Slogadh Eachtai 2012
All roads lead to Leitrim Community Centre, Loughrea, Co. Galway on Saturday April 21st for the 7th Annual Slógadh Eachtaí, or Sliabh Aughty festival of heritage and culture.

The Aughty gathering is organised each year in a different location by a local group. The event was previously organised in Crusheen, Kilchreest/Castledaly, Woodford, Gort, Tuamgraney and Lough Graney. This year the hosts are Killeenadeema and Leitrim Heritage Groups.

Leitrim Community Centre is located 7 km from Loughrea just off the (L 4213) Tynagh road, at N. 530 10.442' W. 080 28.423'. There is ample car parking available and no cover charge. A light lunch of soup and sandwiches will be available at a modest cost. Registration begins at 9.15 a.m. and the opening address takes place at 10.00 a.m. The programme runs until 4.00 p.m. with a one hour lunch break. It is possible to attend individual sessions or the whole day's events.

There will be illustrated presentations on an interesting and varied array of topics including Local History, Farming, Music, Photography, Thatching and, of course, on Sliabh Aughty itself.

Irish Workhouse Centre
The Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna re-opens on Sunday, 1st April and will be open seven days a week, until 30th September. This centre, which received the Overall Galway County Heritage Award in 2011, is the only centre in Ireland dedicated to telling the story of the Irish Workhouse. It is located in a real workhouse in Portumna, one of the best preserved workhouses in the country, with all seven main buildings intact.

At the Irish Workhouse Centre, people can take a guided tour through the original waiting room, the girls' classroom, the matron's quarters, the nursery, the women's dormitories and the laundry. A short film explains life in the workhouse. There are toilet facilities and parking. The centre is a conservation and re-development work in progress. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with last admissions at 5 p.m. The tour takes about one hour. Admission is €5 for adults, €3 for seniors and students and €12 for families with no limit on the number of children. There is no need to book in advance. However, it is advisable for groups of 20 or more people to book. This is a non-for-profit initiative and all admission fees go towards the project.

Medieval Banquet - Lorrha and Dorrha Historical Society
A buffet style Medieval banquet (Medieval fancy dress optional) is to be held in Maher's Shed on Friday 13th April at 9p.m. Try some of old style pig on a spit or roast venison. A lot of fun games on the night with juggling, person in stock, arm wrestling and raffle. Also there will be a sword fighting display. Prizes for best dressed man and maiden on night. Dance the night away with some traditional music. Tickets (15euros) available from Maher's shop, Colette's hair dressing salon or contact James 0872031798. Proceeds in aid of Beire Breifne Walkway.


Daffodil Day 2012
The organisers of Daffodil Day 2012 would like to thank all the volunteers and the public who made it a great success in Portumna this year. A special word of thanks to Pauline Duffy and Maura O'Dowd who collected €367 in the Killimor area. The overall total collected in Portumna including Killimor was in the region of €3,180.


ASIST - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
A two-day skills-building workshop in suicide first aid will be held on Thursday 19th & Friday 20th April 2012 in the VEC Building (Old Vocational School) St. Brigid's Road. The ASIST workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide.

ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first-aid. It is suitable for all kinds of caregivers - health workers, teachers, community workers, Gardai, youth workers, volunteers, people responding to family, friends and co-workers. Cúirt International Festival of Literature Workshops
This year, Cúirt International Festival of Literature in collaboration with Portumna Arts Group will host two writing workshops in An Gáirdin, Portumna during the month of April as part of the Ar Chúirt Programme; an outreach strand of Cúirt which was initiated in 2011.

The activities in Portumna will include creative writing workshops 7-10pm on Thursday, April 12th and 19th and a music/words event with readings with Robyn and music with Lynn Saoirse, harpist "Silver Leavings" in Portumna Castle on Sunday 22nd April at 3pm. The workshops are themed around the natural environment of Portumna and will use the natural gifts of place to explore poetry and prose over a series of 2 workshops with Australian writer Robyn Rowland.

Portumna Forest 8km Fun Run
An 8k Fun Run will be held in Portumna Forest Park on Sunday next, 15th April. The Race starts at 12.30pm from the Forest Park Car Park. Entry is only €10 for adults and €5 for under 18's. The course is properly measured and marked, and water stations will be in place on the course. Race details can be accessed at http://portumna8k.blogspot.com/. The course is over a combination of solid roads and wide trails through the Forest Park.

This is a great opportunity for any joggers who have never previously entered a race to experience the excitement of the start line. So, go find your runners and join us for a jog, or walk, through the magnificent Portumna Forest Park. Refreshments will be available afterwards. All proceeds raised are in aid of Portumna Scouts.


Dawn Mass on Easter Sunday
At 5.45 am a large crowd, each one with a lighted candle in hand awaited dawn to break at Lady Well in Abbey on Easter Sunday morning to celebrate Mass in rememberence of that first joyous Easter morn. Fr. John Hickey celebrated Mass, led in procession by the 30th Galway Scout Group, reminding all present that part of that Easter joy was to be found in the singing of the birds, the flapping of the stream around us on this beautiful mild morning. The local choir greeted the morning in song. The Scouts treated all present to a cuppa and a warm scone after Mass while the Easter Bunny left a treat for the children.


Yoga with Ruth
Classes at An Gáirdín, Portumna begin Tuesday 17th April from 7.30 – 9pm and cost €60 for 6 weeks. Ruth teaches Satyananda Yoga. It is a gentle system of Yoga and designed to allow everyone to practice, both men and women, younger and older. To ensure your place phone Ruth at 087 2434759.


Portumna Town FC
Another successful season is drawing to a close and, indeed, has ended for some age groups. Already the under 10s have retained the league title this year and congratulations to all the players and mentors on this great achievement. Some teams continue their involvement in the shield and cup competitions and we wish them all the best in their campaigns.

The Club held a bag pack in O'Mearas Supervalu over the Easter weekend. The support from the local community was immense and the committee wish to extend their sincere thanks to all those who so generously donated. Well done to Emer Durkan for coordinating the event and our gratitude to all those parents and children who gave of their time to pack. Special thanks also to Donie O'Meara, the management and staff for their very kind assistance.

A reminder to all parents and children that the Club is hosting the Power Soccer School of Excellence, for a summer soccer school once again this year. The soccer school will take place from 13th to 17th August and is open to all children aged from 3-13. Places may be booked through either www.powersoccer.ie or www.mykidstime.ie and there is a special discounted rate for all bookings made prior to 30th April.

Will be held at Country Market in Town Hall Portumna, on Friday 13th April from 8.30 a.m. – 12 p.m.


Portumna Players - Steel Magnolias
The Portumna Players staged Robert Harlings play Steel Magnolias over 4 nights. Robert Harling wrote the play as a form of therapy following the death of his sister from diabetes. The committee decided early into the rehearsals to make a donation of €1000 to the Galway Hospice. On Good Friday, Colette Dodd from the Galway Hospice came to receive the cheque from the Chairperson Marie Gunning. Colette went on to tell the audience that the Hospice is totally dependent on donations as it takes 1.5million Euro to run the unit every year. She thanked the audience and the Players for their generosity.


Hand Drumming Workshops
If you are interested in hand drumming, Mark Jerome is starting a beginners hand drumming workshop on Thursday 19th April in Portumna Town Hall. It will run for six weeks and the cost is €40 for Juniors and €50 for teens and adults. The times are 6-7 Junior and 7-8 Teens and adults. Contact Mark 085 1030864
