National Spring Clean Campaign
An Taisce's National Spring Clean campaign is still going strong in County Galway and this week will see the campaign hit the halfway mark. Hundreds of clean up events have already taken place in Galway and there are still plenty more to come! The National Spring Clean campaign is Ireland's largest anti-litter initiative organised by An Taisce and funded by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.

Events taking place in Galway next week include: Tynagh National School on Friday 20th.

All volunteers registering for the National Spring Clean campaign are issued with a Free clean up kit which contains information, posters, colour coded refuse sacks for segregation of waste materials, protective gloves and tabards to keep participants clean. An Taisce will also liaise with local authorities to ensure that all materials collected will be picked up without charge. Those who wish to take part should go to the National Spring Clean website at www.nationalspringclean.org

The National Spring Clean campaign is sponsored by Coca-Cola Bottlers Ireland and the Wrigley Company. It is also supported by Repak who supply colour coded refuse sacks for recycling the materials collected and Local Authorities who co-ordinate activity in their communities. Portumna Tidy Towns
It is that time of the year again and adjudication for 2012 Tidy Towns competition is looming. The committee is currently preparing this year's application for submission. This application entails an enormous file of plans, maps and photos in addition to a very detailed application form. We would like to encourage all residents and business owners to start planning for the summer ahead, get those window boxes planted and let's get Portumna looking fantastic as we always do. Plans are in place to introduce hanging baskets along the main street and of course the fantastic planters dotted around the town will be filled with colourful blossoms.

Of course litter control is also an important element of the competition and we would ask everyone to continue the great work that is being done in this area. Organised litter picks take place on Saturday mornings at 8am from the Square; however any help in this quest at any time will be much appreciated. We hope to organise a community clean up evening during May and would encourage everyone to come out and give a general clean up to the town. We will advertise this in the local papers etc over the next couple of weeks.

The Committee is always search for new members to join and if you are interested please contact any committee member.

Drift Fest at Pallas Karting
Sunday 22nd April brings Drift Fest to Pallas Karting for the first time. The day will consist of Drifting, with some of Irelands Top Seeded and Non Seeded Drivers and not forgetting the Amateur Drivers who never fail to put on a show. We will also have Modified Cars, Trade Stands and the usual craic & banter you would only find at a Drift Event!

Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a motorsport where the driver intentionally over steers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. As a motor sport, professional drifting competitions are held worldwide and are judged according to the speed, angle and line taken through a corner or set of corners. This is the first time Drifting will be held at Pallas Karting, Europe's Largest Karting Centre. Looking forward to lots more Drift events throughout the year along with the National Karting Championships at Pallas Karting in May and September.

Drifting will kick off at 10am and continue until 5.30pm, with Public Entry from 10.30am until 5.30pm. Public Entry is €10 with Under 12's going Free! We will also be running Promotions on the day, so keep listening out. For more information, check out www.pallaskarting.com and Pallas Karting on Facebook.

Singing Star Steals the Show
Congratulations to 13 year old Portumna Community School student Michaela Madden, who won the "CU Factor" (Talent Show set up by Credit Unions in the region) in the Temperance Hall in Loughrea last Saturday night. She wowed the judges and the audience with a self-penned song called "Where". She also accompanied herself on the guitar. The song explores how a young girl may feel, if a father walks out on his family.

She won a recording session, or the equivalent in money. She also won a trophy and the perpetual cup. She will now go forward and represent Naomh Breandáin Credit Union, Loughrea, in the grand final on May 13th, at 7pm in Leisureland, Salthill. Well done Michaela!

Age Friendly Strategy
County Galway VEC, GRD & Galway Co. Co. are holding and open morning on developing an Age Friendly Strategy for the county. If you are over 55 and would like your views to be heard, please come along to the Portumna Retirement Village on Thursday 19th at 8pm. Refreshments will be served.

Michaela McCarroll Exhibition in Library
Artist, Michaela McCarroll, has been living in the Ballinasloe area with her family for the last eleven years. The rural location of her home and the many historic monuments and traditional structures in the surrounding landscapes have had a major influence on her work.

Michaela has a degree in fine art from University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and went on to do a postgraduate course in Archaeology at Queens University in Belfast. Having always had an interest in the study of ancient and historical remains and their setting in a particular landscape. The way she works is very much a layering process, whereby layers of paint represent not only the passing of time, but also different memories and associations connected with a particular place or landscape. She would normally start off with a more representational framework for the composition and later her subconscious take over and add layers or "veils"of colour over and over, until she is satisfied with the outcome.

The exhibition of her work continues in Portumna Library for the next two weeks.

Portumna Town U12's Shine in MSL Futsal Competition
Moate community centre hosted the inaugural U12 Futsal competition on sat 14th of April and Portumna's U12's gave a brilliant account of themselves. They beat Mucklagh, Willow Park B, Birr Town A, Birr Town B and had a draw with Willow Park A in the league stages of the competition to earn themselves a place in the final. Declan Gorman was superb all day in goal, Sean Lynch was impressive in defense and set up attack after attack, Alan O'Meara was in great scoring form with 7 goals, Neil Connelly was a thorn in the opposition sides and chipped in with 5 goals, Ruairi Connelly chased and harried all day and scored 3 great goals, Eoghan Lynch gave his all for the team. It was a brilliant team performance and the boys were very unlucky to be on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline in the final against a very good Willow Park A team.

Golf Classic
The Portumna Branch of the Mentally Handicapped Association will hold their annual golf classic at Portumna Golf Club on Thursday 17th, Friday 18th & Saturday 19th May. This is the 19th Anniversary of the event. All monies raised will go to constructing a gym in St. Dympna's Shannon Road. The cost is €100 per team. Please support.

South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society
South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society hosts a lecture by Dr Brian Casey entitled Matt Harris and the Irish land question 1878-90 on Tuesday April 24th in Donie O'Meara's Restaurant, Portumna at 8.30pm.

The Irish land question dominated discussions in the late nineteenth century, with Michael Davitt and Parnell dominating debates around land reform for farmers in Ireland. This has resulted in the marginalisation of significant regional figures, such as James Daly and John O'Connor Power. While they have been subjected to historical research in recent years, the same cannot be said for Matt Harris, who was one of the most significant regional leaders of the Irish Land League. This lecture will explore some of his ideas and activities regarding the Irish land question from 1876 until his death in 1890. It will show how radical his thought was and how suspicious he was of unity of action because of the harm it would pose to the lower classes in the west of Ireland.

Medieval Night a Success
Lorrha Dorrha Historical Society held their first Medieval Night of what will be an annual event in Maher's Lorrha. It was a huge success. People made a huge effort with costumes ranging from monastic and celtic times right up to 18th century.

Once entering Maher's gates, it was like stepping into the past. The highlight of the night was when O'Sullivan's Beare's men approached the gates of Maher's and set forth their champion O'Connor Kerry to fight McEgan. It was a splendid display and looked realistic. This was played out by professional swordsmen, Luke Walsh (Dundrum) and Philip King (Tallagh). A Truce was ensued and 0'Sullivan's Beare's men were invited into a banquet.

Guests were welcomed with a glass of mead. Traditional food such as pig on spit, roast haunch of venision, pheasant and rabbit was served. Music on the night was provided by Noreen Ryan, Darren Bourke, Sean Burke and also Luke Walsh and Philip King who left their swords to sing and play music. Guests who were thought to be involved in witchcraft were brought to the stocks where the severe punishment of having wet sponges thrown at them.

The winner of our Limerick competition on the night was Kathleen Cahalan and 2nd Brian Kelly. The winner of best dressed lady was Dianne Dagg and 2nd Catherine 0'Brien. The best dressed man on the night went to Martin King and 2nd was Peter Slevin. Many thanks to all who helped out setting up and on the night including our musicians, fighters and sponsors of prizes, John Horan Tyres, Ferry Filling Station, Donna and Mark Mannion [Bridge Road filling Station) and Pat Cahalan. Thanks to Denis and Lil for spendid food and atmosphere. Funds raised will go towards the Beire Breifne Walkway. We hear there is going to be an invasion of Vikings next year!

Portumna Forest 8k
A large number of runners and walkers took part in last Sunday's Portumna Forest 8k. Participants were blessed with perfect running weather and the flat course allowed for some very fast personal times. The race attracted many runners from athletics clubs in Galway and Tipperary and was a fantastic opportunity for many to experience the amazing facility that is Portumna Forest Park. Hopefully many of the first time visitors will be back to the Park and the town again.

David Reilly from Loughrea AC was first home in 29:29. Caroline Burke kept the Portumna flag flying by being the first lady home, while Cillian Walsh was first junior home, in his first ever 8k race. Congratulations in particular to the many people taking part in their first ever race, especially the many local under 12's who finished. Full results and photos are published at http://portumna8k.blogspot.com/

Portumna Scouts wish to thank all those who participated and assisted on the day. A huge volunteer effort is required to put on such a race. A special word of thanks to our sponsor, Gala Service Station, St Brendan's Road and to Mr Kevin Donnellan, Coillte.
