Nurture Africa Wax Night
Tanya Byrne a 3rd student nurse and a past pupil of Portumna Community School is volunteering her summer vacation to do voluntary work in Uganda nursing in a clinic and working on community out-reach programmes. In order to raise funds she recently ran a wax night in Portumna. Below are the details of the event.

The night was a huge success in aid of raising money for Nurture Africa!! It went really well without a hitch and everyone found it really enjoyable and entertaining!. Between sponsorship before the night €505 was raised and €757.77 on the night from waxing and the raffle! everyone was so generous and it wouldn't have been possible without the donations made by the community on the night and the following help:

To Phyllis and Ronnie Curley for allowing the night to be held in Curleys pub and sponsoring the Dj Sean O Meara that made the night even more entertaining and food that went down a treat. To Edel Wade that sponsored the wax and equipment and had the privilege of carrying out the waxing and guiding the lads that waxed each other for the craic. To the lads that bravely sponsored themselves to get strips of hair waved off for this great cause, some were more adventurous than others and even let their eyebrows and armpits be waxed and more! those that got waxed: Noel Gantley, Oisin Lowry, Enda Quigley, Gary Horan, Niall O'Donnell, Conor Broadrick, Kevin Broadrick, Martin Dolphin, Mike Madden, Enda, Kieth Neville, Paddy Dolphin, Dave Banaghan. To those from Portumna that made the raffle possible with their wonderful spot prizes: Amanda Foley from Escape Beauty Salon sponsored a voucher for a facial and back massage. Pearse Donoghue from the Barbar's that sponsored a goody bag for Mens American crew essentials. Donnie O' Meara that sponsored a bottle of red and white wine. Teresa and Barry walker that sponsored a €50 dinner voucher for the Ferry Inn Restaurant.

100% of the money raised is going directly to Nurture Africa to assist in the following targets for this year some of which include:

Provide primary health care (PHC) for 10,000 Orphans and Vulnerable Children.
Provide anti-retroviral (ARVs) medication for 350 HIV infected children and positive living packs. Ensure 566 orphans and vulnerable children receive comprehensive educational scholarships.
To make sure over 8,000 children's literacy levels are enhanced.
Train and provide loans to 250 female guardians of orphans and HIV infected children.
Improve Children's Rights and Gender Equality.

Tanya hopes to do the following.
Administering life saving medication to HIV infected orphaned children. Teaching First Aid. Treating malnourished children with nutritional supplementation.Working on a building project.
Helping in the community library.

A big thank you to everyone involved on the night also including: Aideen Cunningham, Julie Larkin, Aine OMeara and Kate O'Meara. It wouldn't have been possible without everyones' generous contribution so Thank you to everyone!
