Forest Marathon in Portumna
The Forest Marathon, held in Portumna is back on the 16th of june 2012. It has been voted one of the best and most friendly events in Ireland for two years in a row. The forest Marathon has a new marathon start and a much smoother 5k lap in the beautiful Coilte Forest in Portumna. Entry fee is only €40, and if you just check: www.forestmarathon.com you will definitely sign up!

Coilte Ireland is supporting the event in its 3rd year along with Galway County Council, Sign Out Youth Project & Portumna Garda Síochán. On the 16th of June next the signature event on the day will be a 100km race, one of only a handful of such events ever staged in Ireland. In conjunction with the 100km race, both a 50km and a standard marathon race will also be held, which provide less demanding alternatives to the 100km race. Each race has been accurately measured By AIMS and AAI accredited measurer and has been given the stamp of approval from the Athletics Association of Ireland in the last few years.

Portumna Camera Club
Portumna Camera Club recently made a presentation to Peter Feerick (Manager Portumna Retirement Village) of printed photo books featuring the residents of Retirement Village. The club meets every second Tuesday in the social area of the home and they wanted to express their gratitude for the use of the facilities so they decided on this very worth while project.

After a photo shoot session and chat with the residents the photos were compiled and photo books printed as a keepsake for them and their families. On the night each of the residents was given a copy of their photo and also enjoyed a slide show of photographs taken by the camera club over the past few years. If families or friends would like copies of the photos they are available in Picture This, Clonfert Avenue, Portumna Te: 090 9741810. Shelagh or Kim will be glad to help.

Portumna and District Active Retirement Association
The month May is when we celebrate Bealtaine, the time of new light, and so it has been a busy time for the members of the Active Retirement Assoc. The following activities will give you an idea that these people are far from been retired, they had an Arts night with a display of members artistic work created under the guidance of Wolf Lorrien and members craft work, knitting, crochet, weaving, floristry, and jewellery. The choir sang under the direction of Brid Porter and the creative writers group read poetry and prose from their new booklet. They were delighted to have guests from neighbouring A.R.A.s and local County Councillor Jimmy Mc Clerrnon. Pat Conlon and Richie Burke provided the dance music and the ever youthful Chris Smoth played a few fine refrains on his harmonica. On Thursday last the group had a preview of their songs for the dawn chorus and more poetry and prose from their booklet "Days Gone Bye".
