Tiernascragh Heritage Project - Derrybrien Commemmoration
In 1911/1912 eight (8) families were relocated from the parish of Derrybrein in South Galway to the parish of Tiernascragh in East Galway. This had a profound effect on their new parish in terms of its impact on school, church, commercial and social life in Tiernascragh.

They were relocated by the Land Commission to, what was part of the "Kenny estate", in the townland of Longford in Tiernascragh parish. They were allocated a new "land commission" house on a farm of land. Though now a journey of less than one hour by car, it was then a very long and hard journey for each family. Roads were in poor condition and the journey was undertaken on foot because they had to walk their few animals to their new homes. The journey is reputed to have taken 2 days to complete with an overnight stop somewhere near Abbey.

To mark this event, Tiernascragh Heritage Project are having a special mass in the local church at 5pm on Saturday 9th, June, 2012 followed by an unveiling of a commemorative stone by the Mayor of County Galway ( Cllr. Michael Maher) and a social gathering in the nearby community centre. A large attendance is expected for this very special event.

Further details are available from Patrick Madden, Chairman, Tiernascragh Heritage Project at 087 6505561.

Invitation to use the services of Galway Volunteer Centre
Galway Sports Partnership and Galway Volunteer Centre have produced a handbook Finding and Keeping Volunteers for sports clubs. Many clubs tell us that they need more volunteers for a range of different volunteer roles. Well, Galway Volunteer Centre offer a recruitment service designed to match volunteers with volunteer roles required by your club. We have over 5000 volunteers across the city and county on our database. We have a user friendly website where potential volunteers can check out all current volunteer vacancies. Our aim is to publicise the website so that everyone in Galway will know about it and it will be the first point of call for people wishing to volunteer but unsure how to go about it. This is planned to increase the number of volunteer roles that we can help clubs to fill. We have a monthly slot on Galway Bay FM which is used to publicise volunteer vacancies and create greater awareness across Galway of the volunteer roles on our website. This service is free of charge.

If you would like to use this service, access our website, www.volunteergalway.ie or call us on 091-539930.

Congratulations
Two people in the Town of Portumna had different reasons to celebrate landmark events in their lives recently.

First, Eamon Hayes of "Hayes & Hayes" Pharmacy Brendan Street, celebrated his 90th Birthday and is still going strong, in fact, he went for a swim in the Shannon last week during our fine weather spell.

Secondly, Peg Kennedy a resident of Abbey St. saw her great-grandchild, Adam, receive his First Holy Communion last weekend. To help Adam celebrate this event were 4 generations of the Kennedy family - Peg, Collette, Irene and Adam. Congratulations to both of you, take a bow.
