"Voices in the Loft" - A History of the Portumna Players Drama Group

Voices in the Loft compiles the history of the Portumna Players with a wonderful collection of black and white photos of both early and recent productions by some of our greatest Irish playwrights along with details of cast and crew in every production since 1945.

When asked why Aideen O'Reilly has compiled this book she says: "After the death of my father, who was a long time Chairman/President of the Portumna Players drama group, I was going through his files and found photographs and programmes from early productions of plays. I was struck by how wonderful people were in rural Ireland during those hungry years - their love of plays and prose and their creativity - sometimes putting on productions in the cold damp of country halls or simply raising the dust in dance in others. After investigation I learnt that at a National level this important part of our local history has seldom been recorded and for this reason I decided to compile this book - to capture in stills at least one rural Irish community's amateur dramatic history as representing so many."

Aideen O'Reilly follows in the footsteps of her father with her love of reading and writing poetry. World travel both with work and privately is her passion and her collection of photos from various trips in Africa and Asia reflect this.

In fact it is because of her extensive travels abroad that she became more interested in her own culture and its distinctive personality. After returning to live in Ireland she commenced collating both family history and separately Portumna Players drama group history culminating in the creation of this special book after 2 years work and bountiful help from Portumna Players members. Aideen will sign copies of "Voices" in The Loft at the Shorelines Arts Festival in Portumna from 21-23rd September 2012 (www.shorelinesartsfestival.com). Additionally she will be able to tell if any of your family members were involved over the years and in what productions by using the database she has created to accompany the book which contains a total of 340 family names from Counties Galway, Offaly, Clare and Tipperary.

If you wish to pre-order a copy contact Aideen via email at acornfoundproductions@gmail.com
