Portumna Rugby Club
Portumna Rugby Club are delighted to announce, Ian Bloomer as their new first team coach for the upcoming season. Ian brings with him a huge wealth of playing experience having played over 100 All Ireland League games, winning divisions 3 and 4 while with Monkstown RFC and starring alongside numerous Irish internationals with the great all conquering St. Mary's team of 2000 who lifted the AIL Division 1 trophy under the guidance of Brent Pope. This is Ian's first time as a head coach and he is very keen to pass on his vast knowledge, experience and of course the training techniques that he has learned from working under some top coaches. He will expect much from his players, but they will get plenty back in return. Leading Political Dynasty in Australia with roots in Tuam
The current Minister for Tourism, Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson MP in Australia is the Grandson of Patrick Burke who emigrated from Togher, Tuam in 1879 on the Northampton ship to Australia. Martin 's father Jack Ferguson MP was Deputy Premier of New South Wales from (1976-1984) and his brother Laurie is also a federal MP. Their Cousin retired councillor Willie Burke, was former Mayor of Galway.

Patrick, the brother of Willie Burke's grandfather and was forced to emigrate in search of work as the home farm was not big enough to support him and his three brothers and three sisters. His three sisters Catherine, Honor and Mary, followed him to Australia soon afterwards. As he was only 17 years old he had to lie about his age in order to make the journey. He told the authorities he was 19 and this allowed him to gain entry to Australia. He worked initially as a farm labourer and went on to work as a ganger on the railways. In 1883 he married another emigrant, Margaret Keane from Creegan, Craughwell and they had a big family of 10 children. One of their daughter's Ellen, married John Ferguson who was a Scottish emigrant and it was their son Jack, who went on to be the Deputy Premier of New South Wales and two of his sons are the current MPs.

When contacted this week, Willie Burke says his Father Joe Burke kept up contact through-out his life and would have emigrated to Australia as well if it wasn't for the fact that his two brothers died very young and he was the only boy left to inherit the farm in Togher. "I continue the contact with my Australian cousins and Laurie Ferguson is currently researching the Burke/Ferguson Ancestry and my son Cathal is planning on going out to his relations in September. I plan on travelling to visit my cousins down under in 2014."

In a recent visit to Ireland,Laurie described how proud he is of his Irish Roots and he regularly visits both North Galway and Portumna, where Willie and his sister Bridie Dolan now live. In fact Bridie's son Colm attended Minister Ferguson's son, Andrew wedding a few months ago along with many other relatives.

Colm is currently working as an Account Director with Telectra in Australia and on his recent visit home for his father's sixtieth birthday described the Fergusons as the most powerful Political Dynasty in Australia.

Minister Ferguson was appointed a member of the order of Australia in June 1996 and is known as the Hon Martin Ferguson AM MP. Martin represents Melbourne and Laurie represents Sydney. Their sister Jenny is married to Paul Lynch MP and is the current shadow Attorney General and Justice.

Martin Ferguson is tipped to be Australian Prime Minister in a future Australian Government and when he does, I hope it is as a memorable occasion for his home coming to north Galway, as it was for former Prime Minister Keating's visit to his ancestry in Tynagh.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) Fundraiser
Tony Monaghan is having his hair and beard shaved off and it is all in a good cause. He is doing it in memory of a friend who died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Her name was Debbie Carney and she was 29 years young when she died in January of this year. She worked as Cabin Crew with Ryanair for the last 6 years, based in Stansted. She worked with Tony's wife Lisa, who is also based in Stansted. She was originally from Shinrone in Offaly and it's at her home that the head shaving will be taking place.

Debbie's mother Sally will do the actual tricky job of shaving. The idea for the headshave came about because Debbie, who was also a trained hairdresser, was the last person to cut Tony's hair back in December. Tony thought it would be a good idea to grow it for charity until what would have been Debbie's 30th birthday on the 3rd August coming, he has not cut his hair or shaved since December last year! Debbie's family picked CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) who are based in the Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin, as the charity to which all monies raised will go.

Anyone who would like to donate can do so online at www.cry.ie or by sponsorship card. Tony's parents Michael and Peggy Monaghan have the cards. The headshave itself is taking place in Shinrone on the 5th August. One of Debbie's cousins, Kevin Gaffney, has recently decided to shave his head and goatee, which he has had for over 10 years, also on that day.

Rubbish Clean-Up at Shannon Road Portumna
Last week a series of pictures appeared on the Portumna Facebook Page. It displayed images of rubbish that was thrown in over a wall and into a stream which flows into the River Shannon. The pictures so incensed Anthony Carroll, Maureen Curran and Kevin Hynes that they decided to do something about cleaning up the offending site. It was a beautiful Thursday evening and instead of doing things for themselves they decided to get down and dirty by actually putting on waders and physically taking the rubbish out by hand. Between them they retrieved 27 bags of household rubbish and most of the bags contents were of recyclable material. Imagine if you can Two Television sets floating in the stream, what kind of pollution did this cause as it is quite close to where people swim and fish.

The skip at the Shannon / Castle Marina has been taken away; this was used by the cruisers who moored on a daily basis at the facility. The reasoning behind its removal is a mystery; one can only assume that persons other than those designated to do so were using it. The problem now is where do the occupants of the visiting cruisers put their waste? It certainly looks bad for Portumna when we cannot provide the basic facilities for visiting boats and Camper vans to dispose of their waste in a safe and secure manner. The question now is what can we do to restore the skip. Undoubtedly there was no thought put into the removal of the skip. The big question is how and who can stop the dumping of rubbish anywhere by the people who do it?

The people of Portumna and environs thank sincerely, Anthony, Maureen and Kevin, for their extremely hard and dirty work, which they did Voluntarily.
