Jim Madden's Book on Fr John Fahy
Fr John Fahy was ordained a priest of the diocese of Clonfert in St Brendan's, Loughrea, in 1919. He very quickly earned himself the reputation of being a 'rebel priest'. His close affiliation with Sinn Fein throughout the war of independence stayed with him all his life and led to many a confrontation with the authorities of both church and state. He also took a vigourous and uncompromising interest in the various agrarian disputes of his time.

He was a man of very strong opinions, opinions which he was not at all slow to voice, as forcefully and publicly as occasion permitted. The string of letters between himself and state authorities, and also with his bishop, add a depth of colour and credibility to this lively and convincing review of his life, his mission and his times.

Fr Fahy was included in Denis Carroll's famous book, Unusual Suspects, which gave accounts of many of the most radical priests in the history of the Irish church. This volume is the first full length biography of Fahy and is a labour of love for its author, Jim Madden, who knew and still knows and associates with many of the men and women who are named in the work, both as friends and critics of this fascinating character.

Fr Fahy a native of Kilnadeema Loughrea is a grand uncle of the famous Cooney and Fahy Galway hurling families.

Jim Madden is a native of Banagher, county Offaly. He graduated with a BA and Higher Diploma in Education from University College Dublin where he also completed a Diploma in Career Guidance. He was awarded an M. Litt. by Trinity College Dublin. Jim has worked as a teacher, guidance counsellor and school principal. He has published widely on aspects of education and local history and has had a lifelong involvement in community affairs.

It is available nationwide in Easons & Veritas. In South East Galway locally it is available in Salmons Ballinasloe, Salmons Portumna, News and Choose Loughrea, Hoolahans Abbey, Aughrim Interpretative Centre and Woodford Heritage Centre. It is retailing €19.99. It also may be bought online from www.columba.ie & www.bookdepository.com

Scouts "Vive Le France" Tour
I am happy to report all twenty nine scouts and scouters returned safely back to Portumna from their summer camp in France. The Troop would once again like to thank everyone who supported them in their preparations throughout the year, especially those who gave so generously towards the trip.

The Scouts all had an excellent time, which went bye all to quickly. They enjoyed swimming in the Cruise river, Hiking around Fontgombault, witnessed magnificent views from the top of a viaduct, attended Bastille day celebrations in Le Blanc where they saw the most spectacular Fireworks display, slept in a hermit monks cave, completed a 35km hike, put on a live show of singing, dancing and much more for the lord Mayor and the local residents of Fontgombault, paddled down the cruise river in Canadian Canoes and visited the Normandy beaches and American Military Garden of remembrance, this are just some of the high lights but not them all.

Congratulations to all the Scouts who completed their Bronze Gaisce Award during the camp by completing a 35km Hike and Cultural exchange, the last two tasks required of them. This was their last camp with the Scout Troop, they will be joining the Venture section in September, we wish them all the very best "Keep Scouting".

On behalf of the parents and guardians of the scouts and 10 Galway Scout group, Well done to the Scouters Ultan Hynes, Iain Foulger, Orla Walsh, Dick and Liz Ridge for taking on such a responsibility, ensuring that the scouts were well looked after, and that they had so much fun and came home with so many fond memories.

Finally a special thank you to Liam Walsh who was invaluable on this trip and contributed in so many different ways, and was always prepared to do whatever was needed to ensure the smooth running of the camp.

Portumna GAA
Lotto: There was no winner of last week-ends lotto jackpot worth €9700. The numbers drawn were 3 8 15 27. Five people matched three numbers Eoin Moore, Meadbh Ryan, Eanna Keady, Carmel Kelly, & C. Cooney.

Cúl Camp: The club held a very successful cul camp last week with over eighty children participating in the camp. A big thank you to all the children who took part and to the coaches who helped out. A very enjoyable week was had by all.

Junior A: Our junior A team got off to a good start in their first championship game last week-end when they had one points to spare over Craughwell. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half they got off to a dream start with a well taken goal from Paddy Dolphin. Points from Johnny Keane (2) Paddy Dolphin (2) Ronan Hayes (2) Ivan Muldoon (1) and five from Ivan Canning (four from frees) gave them a ten point advantage at the interval on a scoreline 1-12 to Craughwells 0-5.

The breeze played a major factor in the game and it turned out to be a game of two halves with Portumna only managing to score two points in the second half while Craughwell put 2-6 on the board. Craughwell piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes and if they had been a bit more accurate in their free taking the game was theirs for the taking. Luckily for Portumna time was up and they held out to win by a point on a scoreline 1-14 to Craughwells 2-10. Portumna play Menlo Emmets in their next group game.

Minor Team: Best of luck to the Galway minor team on sat when they play Wexford in Tullamore and in particular to our own two club lads Owen Treacy & Ronan O Meara.
