Liam Roche, OPW Tour Guide/Information officer will present historical facts on the lead up to the evictions on the Clanricarde estate and the conditions the tenants had to endure. He will also give a brief history of the Landlords, the Earls of Clanricarde, with particular attention to how and why the most notorious of the earls became known as the 'Marquis of Clanrackrent'. He will then explain how through the bravery of the tenants on this estate, landlordism was finally brought to an end. Mr T. J Page will fill in the details of how his ancestors went through this trauma and how they survived through the generations.

The Joe O'Meara Memorial Cup
It was great to see the revival of the Joe O Meara trophy at Portumna GAA Hurling Club grounds last weekend. A large contingent came down from Dublin for the match and the weather was perfect, the pitch was in excellent condition also.

Two late goals in the second half secured Portumna minor hurlers a deserved win. The final score being 3 goals and 10pts to 1goal and 9pts against a gallant St. Jude's GAA club. This event was revived to commemorate Portumna player Joe O'Meara who died tragically in 1991.

The Cup and medals were presented to Portumna Captain Padraigh Muldoon by Tommy McClernan the only survivor of the 1991 tragedy in which five Swiss Nationals and Joe lost their lives when a tree fell across the road on January 6th 1991.

Portumna Chairman Damian Coleman, St. Jude's Chairman Brian Woods and Joe's cousin Colum Grogan spoke to the players and the spectators. Later that evening both clubs players and officials enjoyed refreshments hosted by Portumna GAA in their lovely club house building.

Already preparations are in hand for next years return fixture.
