Portumna Retirement Village
Residents, relatives and staff at Portumna Retirement Village are celebrating this week following the announcement that the retirement village has been shortlisted as a finalist in two categories of the NHI National Care Awards 2012.

The NHI National Care Awards are awarded by an independent panel of experts to nursing homes and individuals within nursing homes to recognise outstanding achievement. The award categories reflect the diversity and many facets of nursing home life, recognising not only quality care, good management and outstanding staff, but also how well the nursing home integrates into its local community.

The short-listing for the awards comes just weeks after the Health Information and Quality Authority published a very positive report on Portumna Retirement Village following a recent unannounced inspection. In its report, the inspection team spoke very favourably about the high quality of care received by the residents, staffing levels, staff training, and the commitment of management to continuous improvement of the service offered.

Portumna Retirement Village was established in 2007. Speaking about the feedback from HIQA and the NHI National Care Awards announcement, Peter Feerick, General Manager at Portumna Retirement Village said that the success of the centre was a real testament to the staff and to their professionalism, to their commitment to quality, and to providing genuine care to residents.

It is expected that the awards will be presented by President Michael D Higgins at an awards ceremony in Dublin in November.
