Irish Workhouse Centre Nominated for Pride of Place Competition
Galway County Council has nominated the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna for inclusion in the Cultural Tourism Category. The judges are visiting the Centre on Thurs. 6th September. Project Co-ordinator, Ursula Marmion states "we are delighted that the Centre has been nominated for this award. External recognition is always important when it comes to marketing and raising funds. This year so far, the Centre has attracted almost 3,000 visitors. The Heritage Council, despite having its funding drastically reduced, has again backed the project this year, with a grant of €10,000 for window conservation. We have also recently applied for funding under the National Rural Development Programme and should this be successful, there will be much improved visitor and community facilities next year."

Pride of Place started in 2003. It is an all-island competition that recognises and celebrates the vital contributions community partnerships make to society. The competition is hosted by Co-operation Ireland under its Local Authority Programme. The judges will be greeted by IRD staff, the many local volunteers involved in the project and representatives of community groups in the area. The winners will be announced in November. The Irish Workhouse Centre is open until the 30th September, seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with last admissions at 5 p.m. No need to book. www.irishworkhousecentre.ie

National Heritage Week 2012
National Heritage Week 2012, the theme of this year's celebration was "Be part of it. It's part of you!" In keeping with this theme, events were organised on both Sundays of Heritage Week at Portumna Castle and Gardens.

On Sunday, 19th August, a large gathering of people were treated to a very informative presentation about the Clanricarde evictions which included a personal account given by a direct descendant of the infamous Saunders Fort eviction. The gathering was then invited to visit the Irish Workhouse Centre where the story of the tenants' plight was continued.

On a sunny afternoon on Sunday, 26th August "A Heritage Gathering" at the castle provided a venue for all members of the family to enjoy and participate in an afternoon of free fun filled entertainment whilst at the same time learning a little about our past.

A highlight of the afternoon was an Open Air Museum and Display provided by "Irish Archaeological Research", which is a group of young archaeologists whose aim is to show archaeology in an interesting, fun and interactive environment. Archery, arrow making, medieval pottery and painting all proved to be very popular with children and adults alike. A traditional storyteller, Billy Teare, kept all enthralled with his engaging manner in the castle. Croquet, overseen by Brian and Ann, was played on the lawn. Music and song was performed by the Hootch Hikers. Local produce stalls and refreshments proved to be very popular. All in all a fun afternoon was enjoyed by all who were in attendance.

Upcoming events at Portumna Castle and Gardens will be part of the Shorelines Arts Festival which will be held from Thursday 20th to Sunday 23rd. Two evenings of drama will be held at the castle starting on Friday 21st September at 7.30 pm and Sunday, 23rd September at 6.30 pm respectively.
