East Galway Youth Theatre
A new youth theatre, East Galway Youth Theatre in conjunction with Shorelines Arts Festival, is offering a free theatre workshop on Friday 21st September in the Town Hall, Portumna, from 5 to 7pm. The workshop is open to anyone between the ages of 14 and 18 with an interest in theatre. Fiona Keane BSc, LLSMD and Daniel Cronin MA, both of whom have extensive experience and qualifications in drama and theatre, head EGYT up.

"This is an ideal opportunity for people to come in, experience a workshop, meet and chat with the facilitators and be able to find out any and all information that they may have regarding the new group." states Daniel "Youth Theatre offers a huge variety of theatre-related activities including weekly workshops, trips to the theatre, and as we are setting up under the auspices of the NAYD, this provides members with the opportunity of getting involved with national and international events."

NAYD (National Association for Youth Drama) is the development organisation for youth theatre and youth drama in Ireland. NAYD supports youth drama in practice and policy, and with a membership of over 50 youth theatres all over the country, it supports the sustained development of youth theatres in Ireland.

Fiona, who runs her own speech and drama school, is excited about the possibilities that youth theatre can offer young people, "the members will determine where this theatre goes, they are the controllers. East Galway Youth Theatre is dedicated to the development and promotion of youth theatre through training, production and access, encouraging a greater understanding of the potential of drama as a medium for learning and as a means of expression for young people."

Daniel continues "we plan to assess the level of interest through this free workshop and, hopefully, a series of workshops will follow with a committed group of members.

'Cherish the Ladies' in Birr Theatre
The world famous folk group, Cherish the Ladies are coming to Birr Theatre next Friday 14th along with Maura O Connell.

Cherish the Ladies is an American all-female Irish-American super group. The band began as a concert series in New York in January 1985, the brainchild of Mick Moloney who wanted to showcase the brightest female musicians in America in what had been a male-dominated scene. The group took their name from a traditional Irish jig called "Cherish the Ladies", and the series opened to sold out concerts. Their leader Joanie Madden plays flute and tin whistle. The other members of the group play a wide variety of instruments. Their albums contain both tunes (instrumental tracks) and songs (tracks with vocals).

Joanie Madden who is the leader of the band was born in New York. Her dad, Joe was from Portumna. Joe passed away 3 years ago. Joanie was taught to play the tin-whistle by Jack Coen, Jack was born in Woodford in 1925 and emigrated to New York in 1949. Jack passed away last April. She became the first American to win the senior all-Ireland championship on the tin whistle in 1984. If you wish to see a world famous group performing Irish ballads go and see Cherish the Ladies.

Scoil Mhuire National School, Gortanumera
In 2010, Scoil Mhuire National School Gortanumera celebrated its 150th Anniversary. Last Friday Bishop John Kirby opened the new extension. The whole parish turned out to celebrate this new chapter in the life of this small and wonderful school. Last weekend was the culmination of detailed planning and work, resulting in greatly improved facilities for Scoil Mhuire NS.. This would not have happened without the commitment and generosity of many people.

The School Principal Ms Anne Ryan went on to thank Pat Rourke Chairperson of BOM and the Present and previous Boards of Management for their commitment and focus on school improvement in the broadest for their patience and understanding while the school was a building site for almost a year. One aspect of the project that particularly struck her was its dynamic collaboration of staff, parents and Board of Management, all working to a common ideal: the long term development of Scoil Mhuire.

Ms Ryan went on to say "All schools are the same and no two schools are the same. Perhaps one of the most distinguishing aspects of Scoil Mhuires is the innovative spirit which seems to have been ever present. The pursuit of academic excellence is key to what we do".

The guests on the day included, Bishop John Kirby, Paul Connaughton T.D, Leas Ceann Comhairle Michael Kitt, Senator Lorraine Higgins and Councillor Jimmy McClearnan. Finally, Anne Ryan tanked the students of Scoil Mhuire, If it weren't for you she said the school would be a mere shell. You are the cogs that keep the school full of vitality.

Scoil Mhuire is a great school, that greatness is due in large measure to the commitment and generosity of all who work or have worked here, over the years. Thank you.
