Ireland Reaching Out
An estimated 70 million people worldwide are of Irish decent and many claim "Irish" as their primary heritage. They or their ancestors traveled abroad from parishes across Ireland and are now dispersed throughout the world, making a difference wherever they are – in their communities, through their social networks, or their businesses. Many retain their sense of "Irishness" even though they may be many generations removed from Ireland. They have a contribution to make to our lives, as we have to theirs.

Ireland Reaching Out is a new programme which can support local efforts to invite their Diaspora worldwide to connect and become involved in their place of origin. This is an idea which has potential for tourism and economic prosperity in our Parish.

To further this programme an information meeting will be held in St. Ruadhan's Community Hall in Lorrha on Thursday night September 20th at 8p.m. All are welcome. If we are going to survive as parish communities, the onus is on ourselves.

Another tidy towns year has just culminated with the national competition winners and achievers being announced. Portumna achieved a total of 280 points this year which is an additional three points from last year and in total an increase of 19 points since the present committee came together 5 years ago.

A very big thank you to all who volunteered their time to litter pick and keep portumna so lovely and tidy. To those who gave of their time to plant, water and weed the lovely floral displays, it was work very well done. So much would not have been possible without all the sponsorship and support received locally. To all who prepared and submitted this years application, well done everyone and again a very sincere thank you. Our town is looking fantastic and that pride that we take in our community makes all the difference.

The film is a portrait of place, that weaves together seemingly disparate moments, from the ordinary to the sublime, capturing the complex relationship between people, community and the landscape at a time where many aspects of rural life are under threat. Flower Festival: Tapestry Flower Festival runs daily from September 20th-23rd at 10.30 – 4.00pm in Christ Church, Portumna. During the past 18 months, the Select Vestry has been working on refurbishing the Church of Ireland and its grounds. One of the major focuses of the refurbishment was to restore a 19th Centaury quarter-sawn oak Communion Table. Over the years, the table had deteriorated and had been the victim of a woodworm infestation. This has now been fully restored by a local craftsman and is re-upholstered with tapestry that came from Watts of London. The pattern is called Windsor Tennyson and shows typical 17th Century stylised floral and bird motifs including carnations, lilies, crown imperialis and tulips. Unusually, grapes and corn are woven into the pattern and this is believed to represent the Eucharist.

In conjunction with the Shorelines Arts Festival, Christ Church will present a Flower Festival entitled Tapestry executed by Richard Haslam. Clever interpretations of aspects of the tapestry will be artistically depicted in flowers. This will be a unique event, as the concept of a fabric pattern being the focal point of a flower festival is novel. Just as in a community, each individual acts as a strand in a tapestry and the existence of each strand enhances it neighbour by its juxtaposition. All are invited to spend a while enjoying the displays. Richard Haslam has over 30 years experience in the floristry trade and is a multi-medal winner in Chelsea, Hampton Court and Bloom as well as numerous other awards. who will give a talk on the exhibition in the Church of Ireland at 3pm on Friday and Saturday of the Festival and invite questions on aspects of the exhibition. He will describe the designs, techniques and content, and explain the concepts interpreted.

Art Exhibition: Shorelines Art Exhibition will take place daily from Sept 20-23rd with the official opening at 6pm on Thursday Sept 20th. Once again the venue is Portumna VEC with a display of paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs. Portumna Camera Club and local amateur artists enjoy the opportunity to exhibit their work. Local voluntary groups' "Ripple" pieces are also on display reflecting the ripple effect that their group has in the Portumna Community. Also on exhibition is Mark Henderson's "Street Portraits" with photographic portraits of 20 of your neighbours and friends from newborn to the wise elders of the town. Admission is free to the Exhibition and hours of opening are 6-8pm Thursday, Sept 20th; 2-8pm Friday Sept 21st, 10-8pm Sat Sept 22nd and 11-6pm on Sunday, Sept 23rd.

Solo Recitals: Portumna's VEC will be the venue for a series of Solo Recitals featuring local music students. Budding fiddle players, pianists, singers, accordionists and banjo players will play in public performances in the lovely setting of Shorelines Arts Exhibition. This platform may be the first public performance for many of these students so parents and family are encouraged to come along as support. Admission is free and the lineup is varied for each recital. So far, scheduled performances are 2-3pm and 5-6pm on Sat, Sept 22nd and 12-1pm on Sunday, Sept 23rd. All welcome.
