All Ireland Poetry Day
On Thursday, October 4th Portumna will celebrate the art of poetry with poems and recitations, rhymes and Limericks from members and guests of Portumna Maple Poetry Group. The venue is Horans' Bar, Portumna at 9pm – in "the Living Room of Portumna" as described by writer/poet Eamon Grennan. Gather for the All Ireland Poetry Day.

Peregrine Readings in Portumna
The Irish Writers' Centre Autumn Peregrine Reading for Co.Galway will feature the Man Booker Shortlisted Writer, Paul Murray and writer and freelance jurnalist, Val Mulkerns. The reading takes place in portumna's Church of Ireland October 18th at 8pm. Admission; €5 for an evening not to be missed.

Paul Murray: Paul Murray was born in 1975. He studied English at Trinity College Dublin, and subsequently completed a Masters degree in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. His first novel, An Evening of Long Goodbyes was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize in 2003 and nominated for the Kerry Irish Fiction Award. This was followed by Skippy Dies, which received rave reviews on publication in 2010 and was long listed for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. Paul lives in Dublin.

Val Mulkerns: Writer and freelance journalist Val Mulkerns was born in Dublin. After working in the civil service and living in London, she returned to Ireland in 1952 as Associate Editor of The Bell and has continued her career as a broadcaster and journalist. Two early novels, A Time Outworn and A Peacock Cry, were followed by a sequence of short stories Antiquities (1978). Following this came another collection An Idle Woman (1980) and two novels, The Summerhouse (1984) and Very Like a Whale (1986). Another collection of short stories A Friend of Don Juan was published in 1988. She is also the author of two books for children published in Germany. In 1984 she was awarded the AIB Prize for Literature. She is a founder member of Aosdána. At present she is working on a memoir, Friends with the Enemy.

Bingo is on every Saturday night in the town hall at 8.00pm and this weeks jackpot is €1600 in 45 numbers.


"Voices in the loft" - A book by Aideen O Reilly
The launch of "Voices in the Loft" by Aideen O'Reilly took place at Shorelines Festival. It was great to meet a lot of the former members of Portumna Players who came from far and wide to support Aideen and indeed, Portumna Players. There was a lot of catching up to do with some of the senior present day members. The book was sold out at the launch but we have now been able to lay our hands on a few more copies. These are available by contacting Marie Gunning on 087-2358585 at a cost of €15-00. All proceeds, minus cost of printing etc. will go to Portumna Players. The book would make a great Christmas gift for family abroad.


Film Showing - 'Aughty'
The film 'Aughty' will be shown in Woodford Youth Hall on Saturday 6th October starting approx 8.15 pm. This film explores the Aughty mountain region, its hinterland and its people. Everyone welcome - admission is free and a cup of tea will be available.


Portumna & District Lions Club Fun Cycle
Portumna & District Lions Club are again running their very successful Fun Cycle in support of local charities on Sunday, 14th October at 2pm. The starting point is The Square, Portumna and will take a circular route via the Woodford road, Gortanumera and the Tynagh road (approx. 10km) – shorter than last year! Prizes for funniest bike/cyclist, best individual / club fund raised, best under 18 fundraiser.

Sponsorcards - only €2 a line - available from any Lions Club member or via the mobile number 087-1524200. No entry fee - donations accepted on the day! Come and support the fun & do some good for your local community at the same time!!!


Portumna Youth Club
Registration night on Wednesday 3rd Oct for First Years only and Thursday 4th Oct for 2nd and 3rd years at 7.30pm both nights. Registration fee is €5 and each child must be accompanied by a Parent or Guardian. Sign–Out Youth Café opening on Friday 5th Oct at 8pm. Registration Fee €5 and open to T.Y'S, 5th and 6th years. The success of any organization is its member, so please support.


Portumna GAA
There was no winner of last Week-ends lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 3 16 19 23. One person matched three numbers Martin Madden. He receives €100.


Killimor GAA
Last weeks lotto numbers were 7, 16, 19 and 21.The jackpot was €7,300. Last weeks 5 lucky dip winners(€20) were Brian Donnellan, Noleen Reilly, Teresa Treacy, Eric Trappe and Albert Treacy. Next week's jackpot is €7,400 which will be held in Nevin's.

The club would like to thank the under 16 Management and players for their efforts all year. They qualified at their first attempt for the county A semi final after a long number of years. They lost out to a fine Turloughmore team.


Birthday Celebrations
There were big celebrations at Portumna Retirement Village on Friday 28th September when Kathleen O'Halloran of Woodford celebrated her ninetieth birthday with family and friends. Fr Willie Moran, Prior of the Carmelite Abbey in Loughrea and a close family friend, celebrated a special mass.

Business Roadshow Visits Portumna
Galway County & City Enterprise Board is marking SME Week 15th – 21st October with a major Roadshow around Galway County and a series of events which will provide information and inspiration to individuals with business ideas and also to established businesses. The Roadshow arrives in Portumna on October Wednesday 17th from 7 – 8pm in the Social Centre, Retirement Village, Brendans Road, Portumna.

The Roadshow features Pádraic Ó Máille, creator and founder of Smácht - a group coaching programme designed to help people apply discipline in key areas of their business and life. Local businessman Brian Roche, owner of Brian Roche Engineering will also be there to talk about his story. Breda Fox, CEO of the Galway County & City Enterprise Board will be there to meet you and talk about supports.

CEO of the GCCEB, Breda Fox said: "we are delighted to have the opportunity to be in Portumna and this event is to highlight the vibrant business community which exists in the County and has produced several success stories over the past decade including Brian Roche".

Ms Fox has added that: "I believe that there are many local people with fantastic business ideas but just need a little bit of support and hand holding to take it to make it happen. These Roadshows allow us to meet local entrepreneurs and small businesses to give information on supports. It demonstrates that there are organisations such as the Galway County & City Enterprise Board and other experts available and willing to help you'.

Local businessman Brian Roche who will be at the Roadshow on the 17th, set up his business almost ten years ago with the support of the Galway County & City Enterprise Board. Brian is located on the main Portumna to Gort Road and his company provides engineering work to the agricultural, industrial and marine sector. They specialise in repairs to machinery and the manufacturing of new parts. They produce an extensive range of:
  • creep feeders for cattle, consisting of trailed and 3-point linkage models
  • tractor-drawn trailers from 10x6ft to 16x8ft tippers (or to specs needed)
  • hydrolic ram repairs with new chrome rod replacement and cylinder replacement if needed
  • repairs to heavy track machine diggers and bulldozers
  • replacement cutting edge & teeth for both digger buckets & bulldozer blades
  • decorative gates, railings and stairs
