Arts and Culture Award
Last week, members of Portumna Arts Group were honoured with the accolade of the Arts and Culture Award, presented by the Galway Co. Mayor, Tom Welby, at an Award Ceremony in the Lough Rea Spa Hotel. Shortlisted for this award, the judging panel chose Portumna Arts Group as overall winner for their tireless work and dedication to promoting the Arts locally and to bringing outside artists to Portumna. The success of the 2012 Shorelines Arts Festival, the achievement in luring the presence of Cuirt Outreach programme and enticing the Irish Writer's Centre Peregrine readings all contributed to Portumna Arts Group's profile for 2012.

At the ceremony, when intervewed by Galway Bay FM's Keith Finnegan, Portumna's Chairperson, Noelle Lynskey acknolwedged the many strands that evolve around Portumna Arts Group- from the Omna Singers to the Pen Pushers; the Shorelines Volunteers and committee to the Maple Poetry Group. She also highlighted the involvement of all the local Voluntary groups during the year- in particular, the Active Retirement Group, Portumna Retirement Village, Muirne's Musical Notes, Shorelines Solo Participants and Portumna's Social Services Day Centre, Fundamentals, Busy Bodies, Sign Out, An Gairdin, Acorn to Oak as well as the vast number of sponsors and friends of the Arts in Portumna, The local Culture Night programme was a great success incorporating Christ Church's Flower Festival with Richard Haslam and Portumna Players and Youth Theatre.

2012 was certainly an Arts year that made a difference to Portumna. The award, a wonderfully crafted Galway Hooker, designed and created by local Tynagh based artist, Marcin is now proudly displayed in the window of Duet/Cousers, St. Brendan's St.

Portumna Retirement Village wins National Award
The reputation of Portumna Retirement Village as one of the leading nursing home centres in Ireland was further enhanced last Friday when it won the 'Best Team' award at the much acclaimed Action Coach Business Excellence Awards 2012. The winners were presented at an awards banquet at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Stillorgan in Dublin. This is the first year that the retirement village had been considered for such an award and it is regarded as a tremendous achievement to win given that the business was only established five years ago.

In awarding the prize the independent panel of judges recognised the tremendous team spirit that was evident in the retirement village, the commitment of the staff to the residents and the commitment of management to investment in staff to promote excellence. The judges also commented on the quality care and organisation recognised by the Health Information and Quality Authority during inspection visits in 2012.

Speaking at the awards, Peter Feerick, General Manager at Portumna Retirement Village paid tribute to the team. "This is a team award for a group of dedicated people that richly deserves this recognition. It is a privilege to lead a team who every day demonstrate a determination to deliver a quality service to our residents in a kind and caring way. Our team puts our ethos into action. Our ethos consists of two simple factors, - firstly that the resident must always come first, and secondly that we must always try to do better today, what we did yesterday. It is by building on this ethos that we continue to serve our residents".

Portumna Retirement Village is also a finalist in two categories of the NHI Nursing Home Care Awards 2012. These awards are regarded as the 'Oscars' of the residential care industry and will be presented at an awards ceremony at City West on Thursday 15th November.

The Club would like to Thank everyone who attended, and who participated, whether through music song and dance, or who helped in the organization of the event. They would particularly like to thank the musicians, Mary Smith, Anne Donoghue McGhee, Martin Donohue, Brian Horrigan and Martin Gavin.
