Ireland XO Set to Expand in the Western Region
In partnership with the Western Development Commission (WDC) and the region's Local Authorities, over 468 communities throughout the Western Region are being targeted to take part in an innovative programme to identify and reunite their local parish diaspora abroad.

The Ireland Reaching Out programme (Ireland XO) is stepping up a gear and rolling out into the Western Region in the coming months. Following a successful pilot in East Galway, the WDC region is the next region in Ireland to be mobilised under the initiative. With the support of the Western Development Commission, Local Authorities and LEADER, there is the potential for over 468 parishes to participate in the programme. In the last months, the WDC has facilitated numerous meetings to put structures in place to enable community involvement. As a result Ireland XO is delighted to announce its recent launch in County Mayo. Working with Mayo County Council and the local LEADER groups, the Ireland XO programme will engage with all interested parishes in County Mayo.

Joanne Grehan, Western Development Commission, said: "The expansion of Ireland XO into the WDC Region is an exciting time in advance of The Gathering Ireland 2013. We are delighted to partner with Ireland XO to engage with our diaspora around the world and to drive tourism numbers into the region. This initiative compliments the WDC's own objectives in connecting with the regions diaspora and promoting the West as a great place to live, work and do business".

Speaking at the launch of Ireland XO in association with Mayo County Council and the WDC in Castlebar, Neil Sheridan, Mayo County Council said "The Ireland XO programme is an ideal partner for Mayo County Council's own diaspora initiative mayo.ie and we look forward to working with the Ireland XO team to promote the programme across all the parishes in County Mayo." Mr. Sheridan went on to say that the first roadshow presentation of the Ireland Reaching Out programme took place on Monday 12th November at the McWilliam Park Hotel, in Claremorris, Co Mayo. Mike Feerick, Chairman and Founder of Ireland Reaching Out and Henry Healy, Community Activation Leader, with Ireland Reaching Out (distant cousin of Mr. Barack Obama, President of USA), gave a presentation on the night. "Anyone with an interest in their community, its history, tourism, business or genealogy, is encouraged to get involved and learn more about the programme" he said.

Welcoming the initiative and complimenting both Ireland XO and the WDC, Councillor Cyril Burke, Cathaoirleach, Mayo County Council said "Mayo has a long tradition of reaching out to its diaspora worldwide and this is another step in reuniting the Mayo global family."

While Ireland XO parish volunteers are reaching out around the world, the website www.irelandxo.com provides a landing point in Ireland for people abroad who have some detail about where their emigrant ancestors hail from in Ireland. By joining any parish community online, they can seek direct genealogy research assistance from local people in the area who also volunteer to meet them on their return.

In the coming weeks, John Joe Conwell, Parish Liaison Officer, Henry Healy, Community Activation Leader and members of the Ireland Reaching Out team will be holding information session in counties Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo, Donegal and Clare.
