Pascal Kennedy - Abbey Theatre Debut
Pascal Kennedy a former past pupil of Portumna Community School made his acting/singing debut in "The Dead" by James Joyce at Abbey Theatre, Dublin, last week. Recognised as a master-piece 'The Dead', the short story from James Joyce's Dubliners is dramatized for the Abbey stage by one of Ireland's most important playwrights Frank McGuinness.

Pascal is currently a student at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and received a distinction at the Junior Vocal Recital in he Dublin Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil 2011. While attending Portumna Community School Pascal had a leading role in "West Side Story" and was a winner of the school's "Xmas Factor" competition in 2009.

The play is set in Dublin, the year is 1904. It is a snowy winter's night in the city. Gretta and Gabriel Conroy are among the guests at the Morkan Sisters' annual dinner on the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6th) the last day of Christmas. An evening of laughter, music and dance ends in an epiphany for Gabriel.

The play will be running until Saturday, 19th January. Further details available on www.abbeytheatre.ie. This is a wonderful production do not miss it.


Christmas Day Swim / Dip
The Christmas Day Sponsored Swim / Dip this year is in aid of Portumna and District Special Olympics Club. The Special Olympics Club want to recognise the talent and potential that those with a Recognised Intellectual Disability have. They are fundraising to purchase equipment for the athletes. Cards available from Curley's Pub and Hayes Pub, Portumna. This year we would like to see swimmers and anyone that would just get in for the dip, no need to swim, just get wet for these athletes in our community.


Portumna Library - Book Week 2012
Portumna Library held the prize giving for Book Week 2012 on Monday 26th November. The work that is on display is a testament to the amount of young artistic talent in the local schools. Pat McMahon, County Librarian officiated on the night and was very impressed by the calibre of the work displayed.

Teresa and Mary would like to say a big thank you to all who made Book Week possible, to our sponsors, Portumna Retirement Village, Gene McEntee, Emer Durkan, Portumna Vet Clinic and Busybodies Playschool. Without their generosity it would not have been possible to award the winners with such lovely prizes. Others who helped with both their time and talents are Hayley Alduous, Frances Miller, Daithi Frawley and Kaitlyn Gibbons. A special thank you to all the children who participated in the various events and also to all their teachers. The work will be on display in the library for the next few weeks so please come along and enjoy the myriad of art on display. Thanks also to Noelle Lynskey for her help.

'Coming Home for Christmas' Concert
Mark Sunday 23rd December at 7pm in your diaries to be at St Bridget's Church Portumna for the 'Coming Home for Christmas' Concert. The St Bridget's Church Choir, the Omna Singers, Little Notes, a trad session, the best of our youth musical talent and other Christmas treats await you. You can also expect a song or two from Portumna's most famous singer!!

We need to add to the Christmas Spirit in the parish, so come along and enjoy our very best musical talent. Admission is only €5 (€15 for families) and tickets are available from local shops, as well as at the door on the night. Pass on the word to anyone coming home for Christmas as this will be a great opportunity to meet with old friends.


Winter Solstice at An Gairdin
Winter Solstice celebrations Friday 21st December from 7pm to 9pm at An Gairdin organic and ecology centre, Portumna. Come along to celebrate this magic time of the year. Discover the riches in the darkness, mark the shortest day and the turning towards the light. We will celebrate with meditation, poetry, song and dance.


Shragh Hall Annual Christmas '45 Game
Shragh Hall are holding their 4th annual Progressive '45 on Tuesday 18th December at 8pm. €10 entry fee per person. Large Cash Prizes to be won. Warm treats served on the Night.


University Award for Sarah Larkin
Sarah Larkin a past pupil of Portumna Community School was awarded a University of Limerick scholarship in Limerick University last week. Sarah was awarded the scholarship as part of the UL 40 Scholarship Award to mark the occasion of the University of Limerick's Anniversary. At the presentation ceremony were her parents Anne Marie and Gerry Larkin and Mr Derry Long Principal Portumna Community School. Sarah comes from Tomany, Abbey and is a student of Psychology in the University of Limerick.


Lions Club Collection
Portumna and District Lions Club are holding their annual bucket and Churchgate Collection on the weekend of December the 15th and 16th in aid of the Christmas Food Appeal. As always the people of Portumna and surrounding areas have been very generous towards this very deserving cause and now more than ever your support is needed.


Christmas Market
Bumper Christmas Market on Friday 7th, 14th and 21st Dec. Portumna Town Hall, opens from 8.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. Come and view a wide range of homemade baking, preserves and crafts at very competitive prices. Customers entered free into our Christmas draw.


Portumna Bingo

Killimor Camogie Club
Killimor Camogie Club would like to extend a huge thank you to all who supported our recent Three Tenors sell out concert. It proved yet again to be a huge success and a most enjoyable special night. Many thanks also to all our sponsors, ticket sellers, parking attendants, club offers and a very special and sincere thank you to Fr Ciaran Kitching. Congrats and well done to all the prize winners on the night. The Club would also like to extend a very merry Christmas to all our members and supporters and looking forward to 2013.


Children's Mass in Redwood Church
The pupils of Redwood NS will perform their Nativity play along with music and song at an extra special children's Christmas mass in Redwood Church on Wednesday 19th December at 7 p.m. Everybody is welcome to attend and all are invited to the school afterwards for hamper raffle and refreshments.


Fun Fridays at Redwood National School
Fun Fridays will come to an end in Redwood NS on Friday 14th with an exciting finish! The pupils of Redwood NS will perform a Nativity play for all and a very special guest will also be making a visit!! St Brendan's National School, Portumna
Pupils of 4th, 5th and 6th class at St Brendan's National School, Portumna filled and donated shoeboxes for Team Hope's annual appeal. Fifty-nine boxes in total from the three classes, this was a great effort from the children. Hopefully this will encourage more children next year to fill shoeboxes. Over 9,000 boxes were donated from Galway and they are now on their way to Africa and Eastern Europe to needy children.


Coffee Afternoon - Galway Simon Community Fundraiser
Everyone is invited to to John and Angela Cormican's coffee afternoon in their home this coming Saturday 15th December from 1pm. The Galway Simon Community is a wonderful charity to support so please call out and enjoy the festivities.
