Pencil Cases for Swaziland
The Church of Ireland is currently running an appeal for Pencil Cases, to send out to schools in Swaziland. US. Ireland is an Anglican mission agency working in partnership with the Diocese of Swaziland which manages 26 schools: 22 primary and 4 secondary. The total number of pupils in these schools is more than 11,000. The HIV/AIDS pandemic and the economic crisis in Swaziland have both contibuted to the lack of investment in education. Conditions in schools are basic, and there are few resources. Many children come from homes where the head of the household is either a child or a grandparent. Families struggle to feed children, pay school fees and buy uniforms. The introduction of free primary education for grades 1-4 has resulted in overcrowded classrooms and 18-year-olds in class with 6-year-olds. A full pencil case will be a wonderful gift for the young person that receives it.

We are asking for; a pencil case, pencils not too short, coloured pencils different colours, a sharpner to keep the pencils sharp, a rubber in case of mistakes, none of these items need to be new, and a 2 euro coin to help get the pencil cases to Swaziland.

The Portumna Library is a collection point for the Pencil cases and there will be posters around the town.

Nollaig na mBann at The Ferry Inn
A wonderful old irish tradition was given a new lease of life for the new year by The Ferry Inn, Lorrha, when Theresa sent out an SOS to all women to "Stuff the Turkey Girls, it's Time to Party". The women took over the bar for the night and the men were relegated to the back makeshift bar where they stole the occasional glimpse of the stylish ladies enjoying their testosterone free night.

Nollaig na mBann was revived when mothers, daughters, sisters and friends took the night off and indulged themselves with a night of pampering pleasure including Hairstyling, Health and Beauty treatments, Manicures, Indian head massage, Fashion, jewelry and much much more.

Theresa pulled out all the stops on the night and created an event full of ambience and atmosphere. Guests were greeted at the red carpet event with a glass of champagne and got to meet and catch up with neighbours and friends. Food was provided throughout the evening ranging from savoury canapés to desserts and cupcakes satisfying the most discerning of palates. The ladies danced the night away to their favourite 80's tunes.

Theresa would like to thank all the ladies who attened and supported the event, thanks to all the businesses who provided treatments on the night, Empire hair salon, Escape, Eternal beauty, cupcakes by Lisa, Ladies day, Aloe-vera skincare, Licorice health shop, Ruby Rose jewellery, Carmel Porter interiors, Nutralife, and Wiltrid and Trish treatments. Special thanks goes to Ann Moore Dagg, Michelle Reynolds, Carmel Porter and Maureen Curran for all their support leading up to the and on the night of the event.
