Portumna Forest Park
Now that spring is in the air, the wonderful forest in Portumna is open for walkers, runners and cyclists. At the moment the main gate is closed as the extensive work is carried out to restore and upgrade the road into the Forest Park. But pedestrian access to the forest is available via the Marina, the pedestrian gate at the main entrance and adjacent to Portumna Gold Club, with lots of parking nearby. The park attracts families, walking clubs, cycling clubs and team group camps. As well as an ideal walking area, the forest offers picnic areas and breathtaking views of Lough Derg.

Portumna Castle and Gardens
Portumna Castle & Gardens is open to the public for its 19th season on Thursday 28th March 2013. Open daily, 9.30 to 6pm to the end of September, and weekends only for the month of October. Throughout this season, the year of 'The Gathering', we hope to facilitate local individuals and community groups in holding events which will attract visitors to the locality. Special requests should be sent in early to portumnacastle@opw.ie copy to permissions@opw.ie.

Visit Portumna Castle & Gardens and discover an architectural treasure of significant historical importance in the West of Ireland. This great semi-fortified Manor House and Demesne occupies a magnificent location on the shores of Lough Derg and the River Shannon. Built before 1618, it was the main seat of the de Burgh (Burke) family, Earls of Clanricarde, for over 200 years, until gutted by fire in 1826. The castle is now a National Monument under the auspices of the Department of the Office of Public Works. The gardens will interest both the amteur and keen gardener. Restoration works are ongoing.

The ground floor of the Castle is open to the public and houses an exhibition on the history of the family and restoration works. The imposing façade of the castle faces north and is approached by a long avenue and formal gardens. The walled kitchen garden, following its original plan, is planted with fruit, vegetables, herbs, shrubs flowers and a willow maze, which combine to re-create a sense of the original 17th century setting.

Free Guided tour with admission ticket (subject to Guide availability). Free Admission, 1st Wednesday of each month. Free admission and guided tour for all Primary and Secondary schools, educational and fun quizzes are also provided.
