Irish Workhouse Centre - Job Opportunities
SE Galway IRD has a number of job vacancies for tour guides at the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna. No experience required, as full training will be given. Applicants must be in receipt of a social welfare payment. Tel: IRD 090-9741867 for a full job description.


Natural Environment Training
Free training to learn more about nature, wildlife and the natural environment in and around Portumna, and to help develop a plan for the town, is on Wednesday April 10th at 8pm in An Gairdín, Portumna. Everyone is welcome to attend. The training is funded by Galway Rural Development and supported by project partners, Galway County Council, The Heritage Council, The People and Nature Project, and the Applied Ecology Unit, NUI, Galway. Karate Success
Potumna Kenpo karate student Ashlynn Fahy won a gold medal in points fighting and a bronze medal in the forms at the Celbridge karate championships Kildare. Ashlynn is 8 years old and has been training with the club almost 2 years. The clubs name is Galway Kenpo karate and holds classes in Portumna Town Hall. The head instructor is James Dillon who has a 4th degree black belt.


Portumna and District Active Retirement Association
Portumna Active Retirement Association, wish to thank, Joe Scott and his staff for laying on a splendid array of food for the ARAs social night in D.O'Mearas Restaurant last Thursday the 15th March. Richie and Pat as always provided the music and kept them on the dance floor all night.

They would like to thank all the members who partook in the Portumna St.Patrick's day parade. They cheerfully weathered the cold and represented the A.R.A. proudly.

Please don't forget choir practices starting at 7.30pm Thursday the 17th April.

They will have an interesting speaker from Citizens Advise Bureau starting early at 7.30pm in the meeting room in Portumna Retirement village.

U-21s: U 21's were defeated against Ballinderren Saturday on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-21.

Well Done: Well done to St. Thomas's on a great win in the All Ireland Final on Sunday from all involved in Portumna GAA.


Concert in Church of Ireland
Portumna Arts Group are proud to present an evening of song and words: "An Irish Miscellany", on April 12th in Portumna's Christ Church at 8pm. Omna Singers under the baton of Marie Power are currently collaborating with Portumna Pen Pushers to bring you "An Irish Miscellany"- celebrating our wonderful heritage of music and song. Guests will include Muirne Goode, Margaret Hickey, Noelle Lynskey and the energetic Omna singers whose harmonies and arrangements will enthrall all. Add to the mix a flavour of traditional music and original writings, and you will have an event not to be missed. Seating limitesd so be there early and bring a cushion. Admission is by donation and profits will go to support the Team Cian Fund.


South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society
South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society host a lecture by Dr Gerard Moran, Department of History, NUI Maynooth, entitled; 'A Place of Safety for the Poor and Destitute: Portumna Workhouse and the Famine'. In Donie O' Mearas, Portumna on Tuesday March 26 at 8.30pm.


Clothing Collection - St. Dympna's Fundraiser
Family and friends of St. Dympna's Portumna are holding a clothing collection on Wednesday 3rd April. All proceeds goes towards a purpose built gymnasium which is currently under construction for the service users at St. Dympna's. Unwanted clothing can be left in the Town hall on Tuesday eve 2nd April between 7pm-9.30pm or Wednesday 3rd April from 8am-9.30am. Your support is greatly appreciated.


Children's Art Exhibition
Portumna library is hosting a children's art exhibition of creations by the students of Ute Duggan "Bramble Art" from 20th March- 5th April. All welcome.


Killimor Camogie Club

Kilbarron Drama Group Present 'The Cripple of Inishmaan'
Kilbarron Drama Group presents The Cripple of Inishmaan, a dark comedy by Martin McDonagh. Set on the small Aran Islands community of Inishmaan in 1934, the inhabitants are excited to learn of a Hollywood film crew's arrival in neighbouring Inishmore to make a documentary about life on the islands. "Cripple" Billy Claven, eager to escape the gossip, poverty and boredom of Inishmaan, tries out for a part in the film, and to everyone's surprise, the orphan and outcast gets his chance.

The cast includes - Joe O'Meara as Cripple BillyClaven, a crippled orphan, Sharon Dunne and Christina Carroll as Billy's adoptive aunts Kate and Eileen. Willie Lennox plays Johnnypateenmike, the town gossip, and Margaret Fox is cast as Mammy O'Dougal, Johnny's alcoholic 90 year-old mother. Avril Tierney is Helen, a girl Billy has had a crush on for some time, and new to the stage in Kilbarron is John Heenan from Borrisokane who plays Bartley - Helen's brother. Back with us again this year is Lorrha's Andrew Dagg who is Babbybobby Bennett, a boatman whose wife died of tuberculosis. Michael O'Halloran returns after a few year's break, and he will play Doctor McSharry, the town doctor. The play is directed by Phil Quigley.

The Cripple of Inishmaan will be performed for 4 nights only over the Easter weekend Thursday March 28th to Sunday March 31st. Doors open at 8pm with curtains up at 8.30. Admission is €10 for adults and €5 for students.


East Galway Youth Theatre
East Galway Youth Theatre is producing 'DNA' by Denis Kelly and there are still some places to fill. If you are interested and would like to get involved ring or text 087 2457137.


Portumna Community School
On Thursday last three Transition Year mini companies-'Just In Case', 'RARES', and 'GO2' - travelled to the Ardilaun House Hotel in Galway to compete in the Galway City and County Final of the student Enterprise Awards 2013. Congratulations to 'Just in Case' who finished third in the competition. The students were; Emma Hodgins, Annie Larkin, Gary Lynch, john O Neill and Ciara Walsh.

Team Cian - Run / Walk

Wedding Bells
Local man Evan Moran, son of Ollie and Geraldine Moran, Portumna was married recently in New Zealand to Angela Spalding. They returned to Portumna two weeks ago to a blessing in St. Bridget's Church Portumna on the 2nd March. We wish them all the best for the future.
