Saint Patrick's Day Parade
From the Pope's hopefuls from Sign Out, the papal entourage from the Active Retirement Group to the retired pope in Portumna Retirement Village, not to mention the first Female Pope with The Power of Women, Portumna's St. Patrick's Day Parade certainly had a fun and entertaining angle on the recent events in Rome. The tots to teen dance display from Stephanie Power's Dancers, the colourful float of yarn from Shorelines Arts Festival giving a taster of how Portumna Bridge will look in September and the impressive line-up of vintage cars from Portumna's Vintage Club impressed both the public and the judges. The Mock Gathering from Curley's Bar captured the overall prize in a hotly contested pageant with a Postcard from the 60's from Darcy's in Borrisokane, the old fashioned Farmer going to the Fair, the Goathouse Bar and the Bog Patrol teams hitting their message home. Business entries included the new Country Lane Cycles, Treacy Tyres who are celebrating 30 years in business and Garry Kenny who won this category with humour and originality.

Joining local political, public and church dignitaries on the reviewing stand included the Mayor of Chablis, France who made a presentation to Lord Mayor of Portumna and parade Grand Marshal, Donie O'Meara. Also, local Woodford student, Sinead Keon, a member of the Little People of Ireland organisation, who hopes to represent Ireland at the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016. MC Dick Ridge did a splendid job as the 36 floats passed the reviewing stand.

The committee would like to extend a thank you to the sponsors: Curley's Bar, Supermacs, Modena, O'Meara's Bar, John Scott-O'Meara's Restaurant, The Boathouse, An Caisléan, Horans, Café Rose, Roma, The Cornloft and Beehive for financial support. Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy for sponsored the prizes and Tim & Liam Walsh sponsored the Best Shop Window competition won by Kitty's Shop. Also, a big thank you to Quitmann O'Neill for supply of the reviewing stand, Portumna Red Cross and Portumna Fire & Rescue Service for their presence and help, Portumna & Borrisokane Gardai and Galway Co. Council for supply of cones and barriers. All on the reviewing stand were appreciative of the refreshments supplied by Phyllis Curley. Also, the judges who volunteered are also thanked as well as all the early rising committee members and volunteers who ensured that all ran smoothly. Full results can be obtained on www.shorelinesartsfestival.com website and well done to all floats and spectators who entered in the spirit of St Patrick's Day.
