Portumna Running Club
Portumna Running Club starting 7.05pm Tuesday 9th April at The Engine Room, three different routes (3k,5k & 7k) catering for everyone from beginner to advanced, each meeting will include 10mins of core work (tummy work) before we head out on our chosen route, €5 per meet or €25 for 6 meetings. Coaching: The Club are running a coaching programme for 4-6 year old boys. Anyone interested in registering their child please contact Yvonne Muldoon (Juvenile Secretary).

Book on Portumna Folklore
A new book on the folklore and history of Portumna and district is due in June. Penned by Declan Kelly, former archivist to Clonfert diocese, it is jam-packed with photographs, snippets of folklore and history, ghost stories and much more and promises to be a valuable resource to local historians and those researching family trees for years to come. Declan who is a field archaeologist and now resides in Portumna says he has decided to make the town his permanent home. The book, which is at present untitled is due to be followed quickly with another volume on Loughrea and district with a further book on Portumna promised before the year is out. Aside from directing the forthcoming Portumna Players production of Sean O`Casey`s The Plough and the Stars, he is also engaged on an extensive survey of Mass-Rocks across southeast Galway and the archaeological legacy of the Great Famine.


'Voices in The Loft' Nominated for Award
We are happy to report that the book, Voices in The Loft, which captures the history since 1945 of our local Amateur Drama group - the Portumna Players, has been nominated for an Award in Listowel Writers Week in the Nilsson Local Heritage Writing Comptetition. This is a new catetogy for the Festival and we are delighted to be representing Co. Galway with this kind nomination. The Listowel Festival runs from 29th May to 2nd June 2013 in the kingdom of Kerry and in the year of The Gathering is promising to be a mightly event. We wish it well. If you have not received your copy of Voices in The Loft yet, it is available in Portumna at Salmons Newsagents or online at Kennys.ie website. Kenny's online bookshop has over 5 million books and they deliver all of the world postage included. We wish Voices in The Loft much success in the competition.


Tour Guides at the Irish Workhouse Centre
Would you like to volunteer to work as a tour guide at the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna? No experience required, as full training will be given. Portumna Golf Club
April is the final month to enter the very popular The Open Three Ball Team competition at Portumna Golf Club. The grand final taking place on Sat 4th May. Two teams qualify each month with at least one being a visiting team. This competition is sponsored by Birr Golf Shop and Driving Range in association with Taylormade. Prizes to the value of €5,000.

This is Portumna Golf Club's Centenary Year and the ladies and gents committees are running Centenary Medal Competitions for club members. There will be five competitions for the gents club and three competitions for the ladies club running from April - September. Specially commissioned (once-off) medals will be awarded to the winning lady and winning gent. The first Centenary Medal Competition takes place on Tuesday 9th & Sunday 14th April for lady members and on Sunday 14th April for gents club members. So put your name on the timesheet in good time.

Shannon Oaks Hotel
Galway East Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins has sought clarity on future plans for the Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna. The 3 star Portumna hotel was badly damaged by a fire in September 2011. At the time, a team of up to 60 full and part-time staff were let go until such a time as the business could resume again. Senator Higgins has now written to Grant Thornton, the receivers of the facility, on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce in Portumna. She told Galway Bay fm news that its current dilapidated state is having a serious effect on tourism in the town on a year when the Gathering initiative is being celebrated in other towns and villages across the country.


Killimor GAA
Last week's lotto numbers were 3, 5, 25 and 27. The jackpot was €9,900. Last weeks 5 lucky dip winners(€20) were Sadie Flynn, Charles J Cormican, Benny Hoary, Dermott Hobbs and John Larkin. Next week's jackpot is €10,000 which will be held in Duffy's.


Portumna Boat and Angling Club
Mr Donie O Meara recently presented Portumna Boat and Angling Club with a perpetual cup. The cup was presented to Chris Smith honorary life member and Sean Murphy Club Chairperson.

Would like to thank most sincerely all those who attended and donated prizes for our recent Table Quiz at McDonaghs, Kilcorban. The quiz was a huge success and your support and generosity are much appreciated.


Fundraising Dance - The Bogs Action Group
A fundraising dance will be held in Treacy's, Killimor, on Friday night April 5th ar 9.30pm. Music will be provided by Joe Connors and Shillelagh. The proceeds of the night will be used for the continuation of the campaign for justice for all turf cutters in Barroughter Bog, Ardigue Bog and Clonmoylan Bog. Please support and help protect the right to cut turf for cooking and heating. The Bogs Action Group wish a Happy Easter to everybody.


Solidarity Gathering
Solidarity gathering to support the four men who were summoned to appear at Loughrea District Court on Wednesday April 10th 2013 at 11am for allegedly cutting turf on privately owned bog. Stand up for your private property rights and come to Loughrea at 10.30 to support the four men.


Dawn Mass at Lady Well, Abbey
Though very cold on Easter Sunday morning last, conditions were perfect for our Dawn Mass at Lady Well which was celebrated joyously by Fr. John Hickey & Fr. Abi Kennedy. The Mass was attended by over 200 many of whom travelled from outside the parish. A sincere thank you to all who attended the Mass & to all who helped in any way in making this a very special occasion.
