Set in a tenement house, against the backdrop of the Easter Rising in 1916, The Plough and the Stars is both an intimate play about the lives of ordinary people and an epic play about ideals and the birth of our nation. A good night out is promised.

Portumna Community Childcare Group
Portumna Community Childcare Group better known as Acorn to Oak recently held a very cheerful and well attended AGM. The crèche is thriving under the stewardship of Yvonne Winters and the excellent staff that she has gathered around her. Amongst other items the meeting heard how they have re-introduced a full in-house catering service to guaranteed that the children in their care are getting their "5 a day" and the most wholesome and nutritious food available. As a community childcare group they have a responsibility and duty to fundraise to keep costs to a minimum for local parents and their main focus on this is the very successful Saturday night Bingo which draws a large and loyal crowd every week in the town hall, at which the current jackpot is a whooping €3,000.

The new, eager and vibrant committee elected on the night was Hannah Freeman (Chairperson), David Carty, Morgan Claffey, Bridget Egan, Caroline Mooney, Mark Scannell, Vincent Treacy and Caroline Whealahan. The main message from the new committee was one of thanks and appreciation for the staff for always going about their job with a smile on their faces and for being brilliant ambassadors for the Crèche.

High Stool Success
Horans was the setting for the inaugural "High Stool" Singing session for all who love to sing. Guitarist, singer and mandolin player, Dave Gradwell supported and accompanied all performers with great musicality. With "Walk Tall, Walk Straight" from P.J. Flynn to "Born to Run " from Knoeline Keane the avid listeners enjoyed the variety of singing styles and the choices of song. John Mc Entee, visiting Portumna, sang "Isle of Hope" and Eamon Hayes sang a song he learned over 70 years ago- "Maud Marie". The "Lakes of Pontchartrain " was beautifully sang by Steve Killeen and during Tim Walsh's rendition of "The Hills of Donegal", one could hear a pin drop. The barman, Mick and Cormac, came from behind the bar counter to add their songs too. There were 20 participants in all and a lively session followed with all joining in. The next "High Stool" session will be in The Boathouse Bar on Friday, May 10th at 9.15pm. Register your name for inclusion with Mona on 085 1602956.

Writing Workshops in Primary Schools
As part of the forthcoming Shorelines Arts Festival, writing workshops were hosted by the committee for 4th class students in four Primary Schools last week. Killimor, Eyrecourt, Woodford and Portumna were the base schools for lively, interesting workshops from Ballinasloe based award winning writer, Nuala Ní Chonchúir. The schools kindly allowed other visiting schools to take part so over 20 schools in all had the opportunity to glean from Nuala's creativity. Entries for the Barbara Kennedy Writing Competition for 4th class students will be gathered at the end of May and prizes will be awarded at Shorelines Arts Festival in September 19th-22nd.

Mary McKenna, President of the ILGU was on hand to present the salver to team captain Terry Sexton. Team, Sheena McIlroy (Grange), Pat Doran (Donabate), Gertie McMullen(The Island), Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna), Carol Wickham (Laytown/Bettystown) Helen Jones (Royal Portrush) Kate Evans (Frilford heath) and Mary Dowling (Mallow).
