Portumna Retirement Village
The Health Information and Quality Authority has published its most recent inspection report on Portumna Retirement Village and has again endorsed the centre's reputation as a centre of excellence in elderly care. The inspectorate conducted an unannounced inspection during April and were very impressed by the high standard of professional care that they witnessed. The report praises the proactive management of the centre and the commitment of the management and staff to resident care and in dealing with adverse events. Commenting on the report, Peter Feerick General Manager said that it was pleasing to note that HIQA had recognised the ethos of the centre, which is to continually improve and that the report recognised the close relationship that exists between management, staff, the residents, relatives and the community in the Portumna area.

Portumna Retirement Village opened in December 2007. The centre now cares for 64 local residents and employs 76 staff.

Tiernascragh National School
Over one hundred local people and invited guests, including Bishop of Clonfert Dr John Kirby and several former teachers attended the official opening of the new extension and refurbished classrooms at Tiernascragh National School on Sunday 12th May.

Guests were provided with the opportunity to view the refurbishment works carried out at the school in the past eighteen months and were greatly impressed. Peter Feerick, the Chairperson of the Board of Management paid tribute to all that were involved in bringing the school to where it is today, - a modern school, providing a modern education to all its students. In particular, tribute was paid to previous management (pre-2012) that had the vision of what the school could be, and also to the commitment of the current team at the school, the teachers Eamon Kelly and Melanie McNamara, the school secretary Rose Gibbons, and the school caretaker Alan Moran.

"At a time when it is considered uneconomical by the Dept of Education to operate a school with less than 80 pupils, it is important that such a simplistic measure was not used to measure the benefit of the school in Tiernascragh to the community. The school is at the heart of the community and for so many families it is a focus that brings neighbours together. For the pupils, it's not just about their education, it's about lifelong friendships and gives them a grounding that can determine the person that they will turn out to be in the future".

The school was blessed by Bishop Kirby and the official opening was conducted by local senior citizen Annie Gibbons and the youngest pupil of the school Brian Madden. A history of the school, including a slideshow of pictures was given jointly by the senior classes and following an address by school principal Eamon Kelly, entertainment was provided by pupils.
