Galway Rose Visits Portumna
Galway Rose Kate Kennedy visited Portumna recently as Ladies Day Boutique is one of her sponsors. So she enjoyed a bit of retail therapy at Ladies Day choosing a couple of outfits for the Regional Finals of the Rose of Tralee Festival which takes place over the bank holiday weekend in June in Portlaoise.

Paul Comer of Cafe Rose kindly treated her to lunch at the aptly named Cafe Rose where she mingled and posed for photos with his customers. She then popped into say hello to a number of the businesses before visiting the elderly in Portumna Retirement Village where she was serenaded with 'The Rose of Tralee' by a number of the clients. Kate thoroughly enjoyed her visit to Portumna.

Portumna Rugby Club
Portumna Rugby Club recently held their AGM, it was well attended, interesting and at times very entertaining. There was an overall optimistic feeling in the room and a promise to work harder and smarter to try and drive the club on even further in the coming seasons. When it came to the election of officers, the top table remained fairly static, but a number of new committee members have come on board and they are being groomed for greatness, even if they don't realise this themselves.

The new committee is; Mark Scannell (President), Michael Goode (Secretary), Iain Foulger (Treasurer), Michael Brady (PRO), Francis O'Halloran, Dermot Moore, Gareth Needham, Noeleen Fogarty, Emer Power, Francis Larkin, Ian Bloomer with others to be approached also. Some well deserved and hard earned player awards were also given out on the night, with Niall Quinn getting the Player of the Year and Mark Hoary receiving the Most Improved player of the Year.

Portumna and District Active Retirement Association
The Portumna ARA members invited friends from local A.R.As and the wider community to celebrate Bealtaine 2013 in Portumna Retirement Village last Thursday 16th May. The member's arts and crafts were exhibited, followed by a variety show.

Generations in reverse order!!! Grandchildren came to witness and support their grandparents as they acted out a short sketch written and produced two act play titled the "Gathering". The scene was set by the choir who were directed by Brid Porter with the relevant song "Paint me a picture of Ireland". This was the story of the returning immigrants and their partners and friend set in the 1940's to visit and stay with their spinster middle aged cousin in rural Ireland. The strict Christian: lady Molly had all the "trimmings" including the clocker under the bed.

The six actors were superb and even managed a tune on the dew harp and a brush dance. Molly of course fell in love with the Texan visitor, thanks to St. Jude!! The dancers performed sets, sean -nos, finishing with the "slosh". Childhood stories were recalled with a very sweet love poem by a sixteen year old boy about a "cow". Martha Toughy gave a very professional recital on the violin. Richie Burke and Pat Conlon provided music for our choir and dancers. After a standing ovation both performers and audience enjoyed tea, and a generous spread of homemade sandwiches, cakes and tarts. Everyone then enjoyed dancing until midnight.

Thank you to all the members who made the night so successful and to all the guests who came and supported the show. The ARA are indebted to both management and staff for the venue and all their assistance throughout the year.
