Shorelines Arts Festival - Shore to Shore Project
The Shorelines Arts Festival "Bridge Bombing" Project - Shore to Shore - is gathering momentum as over 100 nets are collected with your creativity and time. Many thanks to all so far who have created a net and to all the venues who enthusiastically hosted meetings, clinics and workshops to date. As you know, the project is big and ambitious and with the project artist, Kate O'Brien, this is promised to be a unique installation and is compared to the wonderful Monet Garden Bridge Kate's artistic creation with the nets and the use of different colours will reflect off the bridge itself and also reflect off the flowing Shannon as it dances the reflections under the bridge. On the road side of the bridge, keystones of riverine heads personifying the Atlantic, and the rivers Erne, Liffey and Shannon will be represented. The heads of the rivers, designed originally for Dublin's Custom House by Edward Smyth, are laden with the fruits of their basins. To complete this project, we need the next 100 nets as soon as possible.

Register with us at 086 3151262 or 086 2640832 as all who contribute will be acknowledged as part of the project. Patterns for both crochet and knitting 50cm squares are available for you. You can join working groups on Monday mornings 10-12noon in Rainbow Wools or 6.30-8.30pm at Portumna Library. Ask friends and relations living at home and abroad so this project can be a Gathering of Nets from all over the world bridging all our lives with colour and joy. So get those needles going now.

Portumna Represented at Elite Soccer Competition
On Monday 10th June, the most prestigious competition in Irish schoolboy soccer, The SFAI Kennedy Cup, kicks off at the University of Limerick. The best U14 soccer players in Ireland from 32 leagues will battle it out over the week. The competition is run off in a Champions League format with 8 groups of 4 teams. Between the group stage and the knockout stage, each team will play 6 matches over 5 days. Such is the prestige and reputation of this competition, that, it attracts scouts and clubs from England as well as coaches for the Ireland U15 team to come and view the skills on display.

Oisín O'Sullivan is the sole representative from Portumna in this year's Midland's Schoolboy League squad. In fact he is the only player from the whole of the MSL U14 Div 1 to make the squad as the rest of the squad is made up of players from the U14 Major Division. Notwithstanding this, Oisín has established himself as an influential player for the team with some impressive performances in recent friendly matches.

We wish Oisín, and his Midlands team mates the very best of luck in this year's Kennedy Cup 2013.

The Mill at Kilbegly
The Mill at Kilbegly by Neil Jackman, Caitríona Moore and Colin Rynne NRA Scheme Monograph 12

Roscommon Library, 5.30–7.30 pm, 6 June 2013

Mr Fred Barry, Chief Executive of the National Roads Authority, and Councillor TomCrosby, Mayor of County Roscommon, cordially invite you to the launch of The Mill at Kilbegly—the latest title in an NRA series dedicated to publicizing archaeological investigations on national road projects.

Excavation director Neil Jackman will be giving a slide‐show presentation of some highlights of the excavation before the book is formally launched by Professor Fergus Kelly (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies), an internationally recognised scholar of early Irish literature.

The Kilbegly watermill is one of the most significant discoveries of its type in the archaeology of post Roman Europe. The mill timbers were preserved in a peat bog in south Roscommon. Archaeological investigation harvested a wealth of information on early Irish mills and milling, augmented by scientific studies on fossil pollen, mosses, beetles and plant remains, and by a new assessment of the early documentary sources for south Roscommon in the eighth and ninth centuries, which asks 'Who built the mill and why?'.

Grass Cutting at the Marina
During the early Spring and Summer months the parking area about the marina becomes a hive of activity with boats and camper vans parking and mooring for a few days at a time. Their presence in Portumna is much appreciated as it signals the beginning of the summer months and good weather. The grass along the bank of the Shannon was not being cut, so, brothers John and Martin Ward decided to take on the task of maintaining the area, giving generously of their time. They needed a lawnmower so one of the camper-van owners kindly donated a machine to the brothers in order to keep the scenic picnic area looking its best at all times. It is said that first impressions are important, the Ward brothers and the camper-van visitors are doing their bit to create a good first impression.
