Timmy Walsh, Base Foreman of Emerald Star, Portumna said 'It is exciting times when we can show our own community and friends overseas that Emerald Star are investing into Ireland with such an impressive boat'. This is a way forward.

Portumna Health Centre
The ongoing replacement of Portumna's Health Centre is continuing to be an issue for local people. Parents with young children, elderly people in need of services and the local public health nurse, paediatrician and other health care professionals need a health centre premises located in Portumna for all the services provided in the past. Local politicians are bringing up the issue at national level and the locality awaits a reply from the HSE. It is known that alternative, suitable premises have been offered to the HSE, but to date, there is still no Health Centre open, providing necessary, essential services. You are encouraged to write, phone and ask your representatives to help Portumna now.

Ryan Tubridy visits Portumna Workhouse
Ryan Tubridy unexpectedly visited the Irish Workhouse Centre last week. Tubridy, who has a keen interest in history, was fascinated by the workhouse buildings and their story. 163 workhouses were built in Ireland. These institutions operated form the 1840s to the 1920s, when the system was abolished. The workhouse was the last resort of the destitute poor. Here, people received food in return for work. Life in the workhouse was harsh, in particular the practice of splitting families up into separate quarters.

The Irish Workhouse Centre is located in a real workhouse in Portumna. The centre is open 7 days a week, until 31st October. www.irishworkhousecentre.ie 090-9759200.
