Matt Fogarty's Open Day
They say, if you go down in the woods today you are sure of a big surprise! Woods always held a fascination for children and adults alike. They also say that every great journey begins with disorientation. Children naturally spin one another blindfolded before an adventure. Alice falls down a rabbit-hole and changes size or travels through a looking-glass to enter her wonderland. When you visit Matt Fogartys woodland whether for the forest time or the umpteen time you will be pleasantly surprised as it is a changing wonderland.

Matt has splendid specimens of Redwoods, Ash, Beech, Walnut, Sycamore and many more. The Fir trees stand tall and proud among a multitude of broadleaf species. Next Saturday 20 July, Matt and guest speaker, Duncan Stewart will take you on a tour through the trees and surprise you with yet more wonderful and previously unseen exotic species among the acres of natives. Matt's knowledge and love of trees is legendary. The way it all began, many years ago, he approached his bank manager for money to plant some trees. This was before the current afforestation schemes had emerged and, as much of Matt's planned woodland would not have tied in with Forest Service thinking at that period in time. if you dream it it will happen. Matt had a dream and he saw it through, he has one of the finest collections of trees in Ireland. The guided walk will start at 2pm, admission is free.

Mike Denver and Sharon Shannon
Singing sensation Mike Denver has teamed up with legendry fiddle and accordion player Sharon Shannon to record "Dance Tonight". This project has been on the cards for some time and they eventually finally found time to get together.

Mike always wanted to record a song with Sharon and when he approached her and suggested that they record the Paul McCartney written song she jumped at the idea. It was all the better as Sharon had a few ideas of her own on how the song should sound like. Sharon is best known for her work with the accordion and for her fiddle technique. She also plays the tin whistle and melodeon Who would have thought it, an Irish recording with influences from Mike Denver, Sharon Shannon and Paul McCartney, it has to be a hit.

Killimor, Our Parish & Our People
A number of weeks back a book called "Killimor, Our Parish & Our People" was launched in the tiny East Galway village. It is a culmination of more than eight years love, dedication and hard work by Editor Angela Geoghegan and Associate Editor Nuala McGann, in Killimor Community Centre.

The evening was attended by hundreds of people from the local area and further a field, with one local declaring that it was the largest gathering of people he had ever seen in Killimor. This publication was greatly lauded by the people and by the many dignitaries in attendance, including the Mayor of the County of Galway, Councillor Tom Welby, Chairman of the Heritage Council Mr. Conor Newman, Chairman of Galway Rural Development, Mr. Tom Madden, and Bishop Kirby of Clonfert.

This 770 page, 21-chapter tome has been extensively researched in minute detail to ensure accuracy and to remain true to the characters, events and locations contained within. Containing over 380 photographs, it is a unique book, in that it is a visual gem while also being a very entertaining and informative read.

This book is an essential one stop shop for anyone interested in their heritage or genealogical research of the area in general and includes a CD of Killimor school records from 1863 to 1913 and therefore represents great value at 25 euro for the paperback and 35 euro for the hardback (plus P&P). To order please email killimornews@gmail.com or killimorheritage@eircom.net Tel: (+353) 09096 76565.
