Cul Camp: Portumna GAA had a fantastic Cul Camp which over 90 boys and girls enjoyed a brilliant week. We thank the coaches for their work all week to make the camp such a success.

Galway Film Fleadh Success
Portumna production company Crow Hill Films are celebrating after their short documentary The End Of The Counter won Best Short Documentary at the 25th Galway Film Fleadh which took place from the 9th - 14th July. The End of the Counter which was written and directed by Laura McCann. Produced by Aisling Ahmed for Crow Hill Films, it captures the moment in 1965 when grocery shopping changed forever. It was made under Irish Film Board's Reality Bites short film scheme and received the award at a ceremony in the Town Hall Theatre attended by President Higgins.


Shorelines Arts Festival
As the programme for the 6th Shorelines Arts Festival is now finalized, the committee would like to thank all sponsors to date. Two highlights this year will be a reading by well known writer, poet and broadcaster, Paul Durcan on Friday evening Sept 20th and a concert on Saturday night, Sept 21st with Ireland's well-loved singer/songwriter, Luka Bloom with local musical guests joining him. Also, the annual Art Exhibition will be the first exhibition at The Gallery at the Workhouse- a space that will open itself to local and visiting artists. Macnas will grace the streets with their Giant Cockroach and children will have the opportunity to learn circus skills. Writers taking part include Dave Lordan, Patrick Deely, Portumna Pen Pushers, Margaret Hickey and returning home with her books, Loretto Leary of the US. The annual Nicholas Treacy Recitation Competition and Shorelines Limerick Competitions will take place as well as the High Stool session and a Low Stool session and many recitals, readings and events too! Local girl, Aisling Ahmed will also show her film "The End of the Counter", winner at the recent Galway Film Fleadh. Portumna Players and local Active Retirement Group are staging a variety of dramas. Sean and Tegolin Knowland will return with a third drama piece for Portumna's Workhouse. With a special Arts Festival mass with Ennis Gospel Choir and the spectacular yarn bombing of Portumna Bridge, the town will buzz from Sept 19th-22nd.


Historical Observations on the Parishes of Woodford and Ballinakill
To coincide with Heritage Week and to celebrate the year of the Gathering, East Galway Family History Society are hosting a conference in the Woodford Youth Hall and Heritage Centre, on Saturday 24th August and Sunday 25th August 2013, entitled Reflections on Sliabh Aughty: Historical observations on the parishes of Woodford and Ballinakill.

Speakers include field-archaeologists Dr Christy Cunniffe and Declan Kelly MA, Dr Joe Mannion, Pádraig Ó Baoill, Brian Keary, Monica Hynes, Michael Fahy, John Curtin and Dr Geoff Oliver. Boula Development Group
Are holding a Barn Dance in Boula Hall on 3rd Aug. Music by Tradstone followed by DJ. Prizes on the night for best dressed cowgal and cowboy. Tickets €10 and can be bought on the door. A great night promised! Please support.


Patrick Larkin Memorial Tournament
The Patrick Larkin Memorial Tournament will be will be held in Killimor on Saturday next, 27th July at 3.30pm. This tournament was part of the Week of Welcomes organised by Ireland Reaching Out last year. A hurling contest between Killimor and Kiltormer will be a 'Gathering Event' for the wider community this year. The format is the old style sports day with two intervals. During the first interval there will be underage hurling and camogie matches. The Lift and Stike competition during the second interval will be open to everyone who wishes to enter. Competitions will be divided into U16 and Others. Come along and give it a go!

The event last year was much appreciated by visitors from overseas, seeking their roots in East Galway. It is hoped that next Saturday's event will again be a focus for the diaspora, in search of their Irish ancestors. Patrick Larkin was a hurler in the first all Ireland, secretary and president in the early years of Galway GAA, active in the land war of the 1880s, a public official and is associated with the Killimor Rules for the hurling.


Portumna Swim Week

Social Dancing
Social dancing continues in the Lorrha GAA clubhouse on Friday night with music provided by "Catherins and the Images". Dancing from 9.30 to 12.30.


Killimor GAA
Last weeks lotto numbers were: 9, 20, 28 and 30. The jackpot was €1,600. Last weeks 5 lucky dip winners (€20) were Martin Coen, Aggie Callinan, Declan Madden, Margaret Callinan and Willie Gordon. Next week's jackpot is €1,700 which will be held in Kirwan's. To mark "The Gathering 2013", the club are hosting the annual Patrick Larkin Memorial Tournament by playing Kiltormer at 5.00 pm on Saturday 27th July.


Tommy Larkins GAAClub
Tommy Larkins GAA Club are pleased to announce that the re-development of the pitch has commenced. This re-development will involve installing a completely new drainage system, pitch regrading, re-surfacing and re-seeding of the old pitch, the provision of a new training/juvenile area with a sand carpet. There will be limited access to the pitch over the next number of months to facilitate this. Fundraising initiatives have started and we ask you to support the club in whatever way you can. There is a "Buy a Square" draw with tickets on sale locally at €20. A monster table quiz night is being held on the 26th July in three different locations-Mc Cormack's Curra, Walsh's Bar Woodford and Cornerstone Gurteeny. Killimor 10K
The committee of the Killimor 10K wish to express their sincers thanks and gratuide to participants, sponsors and to everyone that helped organize the race. It was very successful and the monies raised so far €8290-00 will go to the Galway Hospice.


St. Feichin's Cemetery Mass
Mass will be concelebrated in St. Feichin's. Lackan in Abbey parish on Sunday July 28th at 7pm to honour the 1422rd anniversary of the birth of St. Feichin, the Patron Saint of Abbey parish. Covered seating is available and excellent parking facilities. Refreshments served after mass. Those attending this mass should go to the village of Abbey and follow the directon signs for the cemetery.
