Old Photographs Requested
Do you have photographs of old shops in Portumna? In particular, photos of the interior of shops including the shop counter, merchandise, shopkeeper and customer are needed to exhibit at the forthcoming Shorelines Arts Festival. Portumna Arts Group welcomes photographs of shop fronts of the past also. The exhibition is planned to run alongside the screening of "The End of the Counter" an award winning short documentary directed by local lady, Aisling Ahmed. The counter in question is the traditional shop counter that preceded the current supermarket or larger general stores.

If you have a photograph, do take it to the IRD office in Portumna and have it scanned. Please leave your name and contact details as well as any information relating to the photograph you may have. Alternatively, send a scanned photo by email to info@shorelinesartsfestival.com with any relevant information about the shop attached also. Further information can be obtained from 087 293 1055 or 09097 41867.

Health Centre Action Group
In this 21st century, Portumna has come a long way, but it seems to be forgotten when it comes to the presence of a basic essential hub in local health care- our Health Centre. Closed since November 2012, carers in need of supplies for patients, patients in need of a dressing or advice, advice needed by parents, parents in need of developmental reviews for their babies, babies in need of speech and language help, help that is needed by so many is no longer available from a Portumna location. The wonderful service supplied by Public Health Nurses needs a base in Portumna and the new Portumna Health Centre Action Group will seek to meet with politicians and HSE authorities. You can help by lobbying the politicians and by signing a petition for relocation of the centre in Portumna the group plan to have available to the public in the coming week. There are several alternative suitable venues willing to house the centre and the people who need the services of a health centre need YOUR voice to support the needs of all.

Irish Premiere at the Terryglass Arts Festival
It is hard to believe that the Terryglass Arts Festival are celebrating their 15th Birthday this year and what an exciting programme they have to offer over the five day festival. The committee are delighted to welcome 'Travelling Circus" by Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre to the shores of Lough Derg for their first visit to Ireland.

The festival is organised by a small voluntary committee who work enthusiastically all year round to make each festival bigger and better and it has now become an unique experience on the arts calendar. A special thanks must go to all their sponsors without whom the event would not take place and encourage everybody to support them.

The festival is a celebration of the arts, creativity, talent, inspiration and enjoyment and this year they have something for all ages and interests, starting on the Opening Night with some young local amazing talent who would only have been babies when the Festival first started. The Gala concert in the church this year is an evening with Vladimir who does "Clasical Music with a Twist" a must for your concert calendar for 2013. There is something for everybody at our 15th Festival ranging from workshops to visual arts to live music in the village. Please note that we have on-line booking for all events so don't forget to book early to avoid disappointment.

Pencil Cases for Swaziland
Last January the local Church of Ireland ran an appeal through the local newspapers for Pencil Cases. These cases were been sent out to schools in Swaziland. US Ireland is an Anglician mission agency working in parthership with the Diocede of Swaziland which manages 26 schools: 22 primary and 4 secondary. The total number of pupils in thses schools is more than 11.000. The HIV/AIDS pandemic and the economic crisis in Swaziland have both contibuted to the lack of investment in education. However, I am glad to say that the cases have been collected and sent out to the Swaziland Schools Project. The Pencil Cases went to Dublin along with others from across Ireland. There was tremendous support and help from Portumna community and around the area. The Pencil Cases arrived here in Swaziland along with a Team from Ireland who painted classrooms and arranged the building of a new Kitchen. The Children here at Usuthu Mission Primary School would like to say a big thank you and from me too. Please don't forget us.
