Free Heritage Week Event at Portumna Castle & Gardens
Who do you think you are? Interested in tracing your family tree? Already started your research but hitting a brick wall?

Join us in Portumna Castle & Gardens on Sunday 18th August, 3-5pm, for a free presentation with Dolores O'Shea of Ireland Reaching Out. The talk will outline the basic guidelines, sources of information and use of the Internet in research, followed by a Q & A session.

This is a basic introduction to Genealogy and starting your family tree with examples from local families, with their kind permission. Dolores will provide samples and handouts, which will assist you in your own personal search. Dolores holds a certificate in History of Family & Genealogical Methods from the University of Limerick.

Health Centre Action Group
You are encouraged to support Portumna's Health Centre Action Group by signing a petition to reopen a Health Centre in Portumna. Petitions are available in shops, cafés and businesses in the town. People power and public voices need to be heard to retain an essential hub of local health service. Since November 2012, Portumna's Health Centre is closed. Alternative premises are needed for the local Public Health Nurse to provide efficient services. Support this petition by signing your name today.

Swim Week 2013 Report
Following a lovely hot summer, dampened by a number of drowning tragedies, Water Safety Week at Portumna Swimming area was never so important. Over ninety candidates attended Portumna's swim week with ages that ranged from four- who learned water confidence in the 'Splash' category to adults renewing their lifeguard awards.

The week was a great success. Children and teenagers are taught a comprehensive list of 14 steps of how to enjoy swimming safely, what to do and how to help if they or someone else gets into trouble. The teenage groups learned about basic life support and CPR- invaluable skills for life. The weather varied for the week and on the final day it made the swim tests more challenging. The courage and enthusiasm shown by the kids for getting into the water twice and sometimes three times a day whilst rain poured, must be admired.

A thanks must be extended to the organisers and instructors whom gave holidays and voluntary time to facilitate the week, Sighle Burke, Henry Mullens, Emer Dukan, Linda Browne, Fidelma Gordon, David Burke, Naomi Burke, Veronica Burke, Edmund Burke and Triona Byrne. Barney O Reilly, who has retired from running the water safety week, was reportedly very proud of the team. Thanks to Marueen Curren for maintaining the changing rooms this summer. Thanks to examiner Andrew Lally who travelled after work on Friday to examine the older groups. With three of the team tested at instructor stage on last Friday, things look positive for next year!

Portumna Vintage Club
Portumna Vintage Club held a very successful road run recently with over two dozen vintage cars taking part in the clubs first outing. The cars assembled in O Mearas car park on a sunny Sunday morning and after driving up through the town headed out the Woodford road. The cars made there way to Mountshannon where there was a stop for twenty minutes, they then left for Killaloe driving up through Scarriff and Ogonloe. The next stop was the Lakeside hotel in Killaloe where everyone enjoyed their Sunday lunch. The cars then headed for home back along the Tipperary side of Lough Derg, a short break was taken at the Lookout near Portroe where there are some fantastic views of the lake, it was then on to the final leg of the journey back to Portumna. A very enjoyable day was had by all, the Club would like to thank all those who took part and a special thanks to Donie O Meara and Joe Scott for providing refreshments to all those taking part.

The Club is organising a display of vintage tractors and farm equipment at the Workhouse, Portumna on Sunday 22nd September as part of the Shorelines Arts Festival. Anyone wishing to take part can contact Walter Burke 087 8267054 for further details.
