Family History Conference
East Galway Family History Society`s first-ever conference, held last weekend in Woodford Youth Hall, was a resounding success with large numbers in attendance from Ireland and beyond. A good diversity of speakers made thought-provoking presentations on subjects which related to the heritage of the Sliabh Aughties. Dr Christy Cunniffe, who spoke on the archaeological heritage of Woodford parish and medieval iconography, leavened his highly informative talks with a nice sense of humour, while field-archaeologist Declan Kelly MA brought new insights to the subject of burial grounds for unbaptised infants. Other well-known speakers included Dr Joseph Mannion, Padraig Ó Baoill, Brian Keary, Monica Hynes and Dr Geoff Oliver. Michael Fahy gave a well appreciated presentation on music followed by a performance of a selection of local musical pieces. The conference concluded with a heritage walk conducted by Dermot Moran and all in attendance acknowledged a very well organised event with free admission and lunch provided.

Portumna GAA
Lotto Draw: There was no winner of last week-ends lotto jackpot worth €15400. The numbers drawn were 17, 18, 24, 28. Two people matched three numbers.

County Minors: Well done to Ronan O Meara and to the Galway Minor team on reaching the All Ireland final. A clever scooped point by Ronan put Galway two up in extra time to put them through to the final.

Count U14 & U16: This week-end sees more Portumna boys in action when six of them will represent the club at u14 and u16 level. Jason Madden, Denis Mc Laughlin and Jack Canning travel to Waterford while Jason's brother John, Donal Donoghue and Sean Heagney travel to a venue in Tipperary to play in their respective tournament. The club would like to wish the lads the best of luck.

Joe O'Meara Cup 2013 – Report: St. Jude's u/16 hurlers of Templeogue, Dublin had a very good win over a weakened Portumna side in this annual fixture between the two clubs to commemorate Joe O'Meara, a stalwart young Portumna clubman who was tragically killed in 1991. The final score of 3gls – 15pts to 2gls – 12pts indicated that this was indeed an exciting contest. The Dublin side were very gracious in their victory and thanked the Portumna Club for its excellent hospitality and organisation of the event. St. Jude's hope to host this event in their grounds in Dublin next year.

His friend and hurling coach Tommy Mc Clearn had a miraculous escape and it was great to see Tommy there on the day and to say a few words. A big thank you to Miriam sister of the late Joe who was there to present the Cup and medals to the victorious St. Jude's team.

Family Fun Day in Duniry
The Family Fun Days had its origin in the traditional Parish Sports Day of old. This annual day each summer was a much looked forward to gathering of families and the wider community. Individuals displayed their skills in sporting events, home cooking and arts and crafts.

The Family Fun Day organised by 30th Galway Abbey Duniry Scout Group which was held in Duniry GAA pitach on Sunday 25th was a successful combination of the traditional Sports and the more modern Family fun events.

Activities like face & nail painting, bouncy castle games, tattoo art blended beautifully with the old fashioned bog obstacle course, jumble sale, butter making, Cross Bar challenge and fortune telling to make the day most enjoyable for all ages. And leave it all to the fun and excitement of the two thrilling U6 & U8 hurling matches against Tommy Larkins! A fantastic turn out by the community ensured all events were hugely supported.

But a day of this success does not happen without thoughtful planning and hard work. Thanks is due to many who helped make everything come together on the day. A big thany you to Tynagh Abbey Duniry GAA, to Dick Ridge who was a lively and enthuastic MC, to Duniry Active Retirement who looked after the teas and to the Mother & Toddler Group and to all who donated sposorship. Finally. A special thank you to all the Scout Leaders who took individual responsibility to organise each event.
