Culture Night in Shragh Hall
Shragh Community Centre, Shragh, Woodford on Friday 20th September. A concert of local talent featuring singing, Irish dancing, Set Dancing, Drama, Poetry Reading, Traditional Music and much much more… Starts at 8pm (sharp). All are welcome. Admission Free.


Portumna & District Angling Association
Portumna & District Angling Association is holding two competitions on Sunday September 15th from 1 - 5pm. First Competiton: Trout competition for the "Des Murphy Trophy" and cash prizes (Adult). Second Competition: Open competition biggest fish (any species) for the "Donie O'Meara Trophy" and voucher prizes for this under 16s open competition, entry free for under 16s. Start and finish at the club.


Mucky Runners - Fun Obstacle Course
Mucky Runners is a new 'Fun Obstacle Course' that will be held in Portumna Forest Park on Sunday 27th October 2013 at 12pm. It will be a great day out for anyone who enjoys a fun challenge with lots of thrills and spills promised! The event is open to everyone and includes a junior course for little mucky ducks! There will be food stalls, face painting, bouncy castles and lots of fun on the day. So round up the troops, little and large, and mark your diary for a Fun Family October Bank Holiday Weekend. Portumna Town FC
The soccer club would like to congratulate our younger players at under 11 Kevin Cahalin, Liam Donghue and Ryan Deegan. At under 10 Lucy Tierney, Olivia Kalachy, Rian Moran Scott Mannion and David Greenwood who had trials for the Midland School boys / girls emerging talent squads in July. They all did fantastically well and we at the club are very proud of their achievements. A special mention has to be made with regard to Lucy and Olivia, who are the first girls to be picked for an emerging talent squad. Well done to all who have made it through to the final squad and to those who did not make it this time we would also like to say well done for your efforts.


Annual Threshing in Clonoon / Shragh
The Annual Threshing will take place in Clonoon / Shragh on Sun 15th Sept from dinner time and this year's proceeds are in aid of Arthritis Ireland. Along with the vintage display of cars tractors and old machinery and the threshing of Oats with 1919 Thresher there are many new events this year to cover a wide variety of interests. The Red Cross are putting on a display of a car accident scene. There are Pony & Trap rides. Guess the weight of a Heifer. Horse Racing. Pillow Fights. Mouse racing. Dog and Duck Display. Sheaf-throwing. Tractor Pulling. Butter Making. Local Musicians. Bar B Q and refreshment facilities all day. All proceeds this year are for the benefit of Arthritis Ireland. Shorelines Arts Festival
As the countdown begins for the 6th Shorelines Arts Festival, spaces at workshops and tickets for concerts are selling fast. For the young children aged 8-12, get your name down for Brook Tate on Sunday Sept 22nd 3.30pm-5.30pm at The Studio at the Engine Room. Brook, a young choreographer and drama teacher from London will facilitate a 2 hour workshop in musical theatre and drama. The fee is €8 with reduction available for siblings. For the teenagers 12-18 years old, Friday Sept 20th at 4.30pm, join East Galway Youth Theatre in Portumna Town Hall for a new season of workshops in drama and theatre specially designed for this age group. Call 085 2810895 for more details.

Writer, Paul Durcan, whose poetry features on the Leaving Cert Syllabus in English for 2015-2018 will read at Portumna's Christ Church on Friday night Sept 20th at 8.30pm. With local singer songwriter, Miriam Donohue, who recently launched an EP, this intimate concert will be a special highlight of Shorelines.

On Saturday, Sept 21st, Luka Bloom will perform and will be ably supported by Joe Casey and guest Ruth Smith. Tickets for these events can be booked online or at Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy, Ladies Day and Palmerston Stores. Seating is limited and tickets are selling fast- so avoid disappointment.

Local neighbours and characters are taking to the stage in two drama productions in Portumna Castle. The performances will be in the lovely upstairs room but seating numbers are strictly limited. Passes are available (free of charge) for the two events- "Café Conversations" by Greg O'Connor and directed by Marian Frawley featuring Portumna Players – passes Friday Sept 20th Culture Night at 7pm can be collected at Café Rose while Jim Hynes' production of "Riders to the Sea" with passes for the Half-Day Thursday Drama Group on Saturday Sept 21st at 5pm available from Portumna Dairy Services (Tim & Liam Walsh).

The writing workshop, Chasing Visions with Dave Lordan on Sunday Sept 22nd 3.30pm-5.30pm in An Gairdin is designed for all writers and will be challenging yet engaging. Book one of the few places remaining by calling Mary on 086 366 3439 – at €10, it may start off the next Booker prize winner. An Gairdin also hosts a four hour Textile Art Workshop with Ann Moore who brings classic embroidery into contemporary fashion. Book at 09097 41689. Portumna Pen Pushers - Painting With Words
Earlier this summer, Portumna Pen Pushers invited local artists to submit a painting to the group. From the paintings put forward, each member of the Pen Pushers responded in writing to the art work. The art and the words will come together when Portumna Pen Pushers read their pieces at The Gallery at The Workhouse at 4pm on Saturday, Sept 21st. This challenging process was both inspiring and interesting. All welcome to come along and see and hear.


Portumna Vintage Club
As part of this years Shorelines Arts Festival Portumna Vintage Club are holding a display of vintage tractors and farm machinery at the Workhouse center courtyard on Sunday 22nd September from 11am to 4pm. All are welcome and admission is free. Anyone interested in exhibiting tractors etc please contact Walter Burke on 087 8267054. The clubs next meeting will be held in O Mearas on Tuesday 17th September at 9pm.


Portumna Bingo
Bingo is on in the Portumna Town Hall every Saturday night at 8pm, and this weeks jackpot is €4050 in 45 numbers or less.

Portumna girls for Croke Park: The best of luck to Megan Moran, Katie O Brien and Niamh McClearn who are part of the Galway Intermediate playing panel in this weekends All-Ireland in the Camogie final.


Wren's Nest Boarding and Training Kennels
The Wren's Nest Boarding and Training Kennels won of the Best Male Handler/Obedient Dog with a German Pointer bitch called Judy at the Birr Game Fair. This is the second year in a row Francis & Judy has won this title.
