Malin-Mizen 400-mile Cancer Charity Run
Pádraig (or Paddy) Belton is doing a small solo and unaccompanied charity jog down the length of Ireland, 400 miles from Malin to Mizen, from the 1st to 12th October to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

He will be running 400 miles in total, at a clip of about 33 miles a day (slightly more than a marathon). His longest day is a slightly knackering 43 miles, from Portumna to the city of Limerick, and he'll be hosted in Portumna on the 7th October by the Portumna Lions Club.

He will be sent off at the top of Ireland by a group of locals from Movile, Derry, and Donegal, and met in Mizen Head on the 12th October by a collection of supporters from around West Cork and beyond. Along the way he is being hosted by kindly locals - Lions Club members in Portumna, Rotarians in Athlone, and a town councillor in Co. Leitrim - and a supporter from Coleraine will film video footage at his send-off and at the midpoint of his run.

This run follows up on his solo, unaccompanied 1,000-mile Land's End-John o' Groats cycle last October, which raised £3,500 for a new portable CT scanner in the Royal London Hospital's Trauma Unit. Both fundraising expeditions ended on the 12th October, in tribute to his mother's death that day.

So far as he has been able to discover, Pádraig may be the first person ever to run the length of Ireland solo and unaccompanied. He attributes this to not knowing anyone with a car.

More information about his route is online at www.justgiving.com/RunPaddy, and Pádraig is very grateful for all press coverage, support, donations - and any Portumna people who might wish to join him for bits of his run!

Killimor GAA
Last weeks lotto numbers were 8, 14, 22 and 24. The jackpot was €2,500. Last weeks 5 lucky dip winners(€20) were Adrian Forde, Margaret Blaney, Nuala Hoary, Jimmy Hanney and John Murphy. Next week's jackpot is €2,600 which will be held in Duffy's.

Portumna and District Active Retirement Association
Congratulations to all the members who contributed to our 'Culture Night' especially our drama group and their wonderful locally written and produced play which is appropriately called for the year that is in it:" The Gathering". They also wish to thank their audience who participated in the sing-a-along. Martha Touhy sang most beautifully accompanying herself on the guitar.

Shorelines Festival
Those of you who attended any single event at the sixth annual Shorelines festival will know what a success it was. And if you attended more than one you'll know what a riproaring success it was! And the good news is that the festival is not completely over.

The art exhibition in the Gallery at the Workhouse continues until the afternoon of Saturday 28th. The two rooms upstairs are full of works of art – paintings, etchings, pastels, drawings, sculptures and craft art pieces. Many of them are for sale, at a huge range of prices, and the exhibition is completely free to visit. There are two free raffles that you should take part in. One is to win a book donated by Siobhan Cox Carlos, who gave a talk about her path to being an artist, and the other is a huge framed painting very kindly donated to the festival by local artist Clarissa Webb. After the close of the exhibition on Saturday night the committee will contact the lucky winners. As we have no storage facilities, it is very important that you take away any unsold pieces.

Anyone who entered a piece of art is requested to collect it on Saturday 28th from 4 -6pm or Sunday 29th from 4 -6pm.

10th Galway Portumna Scout Group
Portumna Scout Group is back in action again for the new Scouting Year. The Group currently has 70 youth members, aged from six to 17, enjoying their Scouting journey. The four Sections within the Group, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures, are supported by a very dedicated and skilled group of adult Scouters.

Last year all Sections within the Group we active in the great outdoors. The Beaver Section had their first ever-overnight camp without parents, a huge achievement for 6-8 year olds. Cubs stayed local on their Summer Camp to avail of the fantastic water and woodland facilities the town has to offer. Our Scouts explored to the Dingle Peninsula, surfing, climbing and swimming. They also visited Annascaul to pay homage to Tom Crean, Antarctic explorer and Scouting hero. Ventures are continually on the move by water and foot across the wilds. Youth members within each Section are currently finalising their Programme Plans for the year ahead, while also taking full advantage of the late summer.

The Group AGM will be held on Thursday, 10th October and all those interested in Scouting in Portumna are invited to attend.

'Riders to the Sea' in Portumna Castle
The "Half Day Thursday Drama Group" Portumna staged JM Synges's classic play 'Riders to the Sea' in Portumna Castle on last Saturday afternoon. It was an excellent production by the group. This was their first time to work as an ensemble; hopefully it will not be their last as they were magnificent. This amazing group worked through the long hot summer evenings rehearsing this Synge classic, which he wrote in 1902. They created an evening full of passion, dedication and entertained the audience as well. The word on the street is that they may stage it again, we will only have to wait and.

Mairín Fahy played the intro and closing music, which was composed by her brother Ger Fahy. Her playing brought a sense of empathy to the play.

Computer Classes
Evening computer classes for beginners and improvers will be starting soon at the IRD Centre, Abbey St. Portumna. For further information call into the Centre or tel: 090-9741867.
