Archaeological Heritage Exhibition
Traces of the Past showing in The Gallery at the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna. Following a very successful art exhibition held in the The Gallery during the Shoreline Festival, Portumna Shoreline Festival committee have managed to attract yet another exhibition to Portumna. Visitors have the opportunity to view some of the most iconic sites from around Ireland, such as Brú na Bóinne, Skellig Michael and the Hill of Tara. The exhibition was launched in May at Wood Quay by Minister Jimmy Deenihan, and the Gallery at the Irish workhouse Centre is the first stop on its tour around Ireland.

A visit to this exhibition is a must and while there also take in the story of the Irish Workhouse Centre to see the great work that has been carried out on the workhouse over the past year.

Background Note: Over the past sixty years throughout Europe, archaeological aerial photography has brought to light more previously unknown heritage sites than any other method of exploration. Aerial photography has now been joined by satellite imagery, airborne laser scanning (lidar) and a variety of other airborne and ground-based survey techniques. These are known collectively as remote sensing, since they explore what is beneath the earth or ocean without disturbing its surface or damaging what lies below.

An EU initiative, ArchaeoLandscapes, brings together experts from across Europe to promote and develop the use of remote sensing within archaeology. This exhibition aims to showcase the finest examples of their work and highlights the range of techniques available, and the science and theory behind them. It will illustrate how these techniques have been used on iconic archaeological monuments and landscapes from Ireland and the rest of Europe.

The content of this exhibition represents the culmination of the collaborative activities of 55 prestigious institutions from 26 European countries. This exhibition aims to 'Promote the experts' by highlighting ground breaking research into the application of science and technology to the field of cultural heritage and archaeology.

National Famine Memorial Day
The National Famine Memorial Day has been held since 2008, rotating around each of the provinces, and is to ensure that the famine, its victims and its legacy are not forgotten. The 2014 National Famine Commemoration is due to be held in Connacht. This Commemoration ceremony comprises two elements. The programme opens with a ceremony in which the local community is greatly involved and culminates in the formal State ceremonial event, which is open to the public and includes the National Flag, military honours and wreath laying ceremonies. This formal ceremony is generally preceded by a week long programme of events all connected to the Irish famine or famine in the modern world. Galway County Council has made an application to the National Famine Commemoration Committee to host the Commemoration in Galway in 2014, culminating with the National Famine Memorial Day in the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna in May 2014.

The Centre is located in the former Portumna Workhouse complex, which is open to the public, as a visitor centre, telling the story of the Irish Workhouse. While the workhouses operated as an institution from the early 1840s to the early 1820s, it was in particular the terrible conditions during the famine years that remained in the memory of people for generations. The workhouse was not spoken about. The "paupers" did not have a voice. The workhouses that remain today are physical evidence of a time in that has left an indelible mark on the national psyche.

Local community organisations and all involved with the Irish Workhouse Centre have pledged their fullest support to Galway County Council in its bid to host the National Famine Commemoration 2014, stating that it would be such an honour for Portumna to host the formal State ceremony and to be so directly involved in the National Famine Commemoration 2014.
