East Galway Youth Theatre
Schools back and with it EGYT! Workshops commence with an introductory session this Sunday 13th of October in the Townhall, Portumna at 2pm. Last year saw groups starting in Loughrea & Portumna. The groups enjoyed trips to the theatre most notably Sanctuary in the Galway Arts Festival and EGYT hoodies, with the highlight of the year being the shows the two groups put on, A Vampire Story in Loughrea and DNA in Portumna.

Fiona Keane and Daniel Cronin, both of whom have extensive experience and qualifications in drama and theatre, head EGYT up. "This is an ideal opportunity for people to come in, experience a workshop, meet and chat with the facilitators and be able to find out any and all information that they may have regarding the group." states Daniel "Youth Theatre offers a huge variety of theatre-related activities including weekly workshops, trips to the theatre, and as we have set up under the auspices of the NAYD, this provides members with the opportunity of getting involved with national and international events."

NAYD (National Association for Youth Drama) is the development organisation for youth theatre and youth drama in Ireland. NAYD supports youth drama in practice and policy, and with a membership of over 50 youth theatres all over the country, it supports the sustained development of youth theatres in Ireland. Fiona, who runs her own speech and drama school, is excited about the possibilities that youth theatre offers young people, "EGYT is dedicated to the development and promotion of youth theatre through training, production and access, encouraging a greater understanding of the potential of drama as a medium for learning and as a means of expression for young people."

Coillte to Market Irish Forests to Film Companies
Irish forests could soon be popping up in films and television programmes around the world following a a new deal Coillte has signed to market its forests and recreation sites. The state forestry body has signed an agreement with film and TV location specialists O'Carroll Mulhern Services (OCMS) to market Coillte properties for film, television and event business.

Coillte, whose estate includes 10 forest parks and over 150 recreation sites, already captures revenue from the licensing of sites as filming locations, but it is expected that this new business initiative will substantially increase those revenues. The film and television industry is worth approximately € 550 million annually in Ireland and supports about 6,500 full time jobs in the audio visual production sector. Furthermore, Fáilte Ireland estimates that 20 per cent of tourists visit Ireland as a direct result of seeing images of the country on screen and such "film induced tourism" is estimated to be worth € 350 million per annum to the Irish economy.

Mark Foley, managing director of Coillte's enterprise division, said the agreement will benefit a range of parties, "as increased film and TV production should lead to an influx in visitor numbers, boosting local economies in the process." Ireland has long been a popular location for film producers and the production of TV series in Ireland has also expanded rapidly in recent years, with shows such as the BBC's 'Ripper Street' and the History Channel's 'Vikings' both made here.

Macmillan Trust Run
Padraig Belton (Paddy) has just become the first person ever (we think) to run the entire length of the island of Ireland unassisted i.e. he did it solo with no supporting vehicles or any of that nonsense, staying with local people at every stop. Raising funds and awareness for the Macmillan Cancer trust.

On his 7th night he stayed in Portumna at the generousity of mary Lynch from Oak Lodge B&B. On the evening he met with Portumna & District lions Club who donated towards his charity fundraiser and who have been following him via facebook along with many more portumna community people.

Padraig completed his tun on the 12th October, which coincides with the anniversary of his mothers death from Cancer.

More than a marathon a day for more days than I care to think about, much helped by kind people along the way. If you haven't sponsored him yet there is still time at https://www.justgiving.com/RunPaddy/
