Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal
The annual Team Hope Christmas shoebox appeal was very well supported this year with over three hundred filled boxes donated by locals, St Brendan's Primary School, the Community College in Portumna, Gortanumera primary school and the Heritage centre Killimor.

Team Hope is an Irish, interdenominational Christian development aid charity, working with communities in Eastern Europe, former Soviet Union and Africa. Every year thousands of volunteers, students, parents, and community leaders rally together across all of Ireland to pack shoeboxes that are then delivered to needy children.

Since it started in Galway fourteen years ago over 160,000 boxes have been sent from the county. Each year a small team from Ireland goes to work with the overseas partners to distribute the boxes to local hospitals, schools, and community centers or wherever there is a need. This year Maria Rossiter from Portumna will be part of that team and will travel to Oradea in Romania from 12th to 16th December. She would like to give thanks to the local community for their wonderful support and is looking forward to sharing her experiences of the trip when she returns.

Portumna Retirement Village
At the Galway County Mayor Awards held this week Tony Williams and Portumna Retirement Village were runners-up in the 'Business Contribution to Community Award'. The Mayor's Award is to recognise the social impact and the overall contribution made by Tony and Portumna Retirement Village to the local community.

This December Portumna Retirement Village celebrates six years since it opened and in that time it has earned a reputation as one of the best nursing homes in the country, winning several awards for its care excellence, team skills and contribution to the community.

Lorrha Variety Group Present "Canaries"
Lorrha Variety Group will be presenting its latest production, "Canaries", a good, light comedy written by Bernard Farrell, in Lorrha Community Hall this coming Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 29th, 30th November & 1st December at 8.30pm.

Plot wise, 'Canaries' is set on a bar in a small hotel on Gran Canaria and follows the stories of three Dublin couples and one German couple who encounter each other while on holiday. Thanks to the presence of a handsome barman who mixes it up with the ladies, rising temperatures are not solely attributed to the blazing sun overhead! The presence of a scheming gambler is an added ingredient to a potent cocktail and before too long, all to rib tickling effect, the secrets of our holidaymakers are revealed!

All punters are advised to bring their medication in case they laugh too much, it looks like three nights of hilarity shall ensue out Lorrha way. Best of luck to the cast, director and backstage team that have worked so hard in recent months to deliver further theatrical high-jinks for audiences to savour this week.
