Switch On of Portumna Christmas Lights
With the festive season almost upon us the Portumna Chamber of Commerce is happy to report that Christmas cheer is abundant in our town as we are set to sparkle and shine on Friday December 6th. The Christmas lights will be switched on in the town centre by the big man himself Santa as he makes a brief appearance from his busy period at the North Pole. Santa has asked that all the boys and girls of Portumna come out to help him ignite the spirit of Christmas at 5:30pm. He hopes to hear them singing and cheering as he brings his magic to Portumna.

Portumna Businesses - Late Opening & Instore Events
Many businesses will be open late for the big switch on. Some will be running in-house events and offering special 'Festive Friday' promotions and discounts for customers. Would this not be the perfect time to grab a bargain at this special time of year?

Shop Local Spend & Win Draw
In the weeks prior to Christmas, shoppers will be entered into a free draw as part of the 'Spend and Win Shop Local' promotion every time they spend money locally. There is thousands of Euros in vouchers to be won. The main prize draw will take place on Saturday 21st of December 2013.

Portumna Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all the supporting businesses who have donated towards the lights and the draw to date. Further donations from businesses and the public would be greatly welcomed and can be left into Ladies Day Boutique or Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy.

Tribute Event to Seamus Heaney
Portumna Arts Group and Pen Pushers played a major part in a Tribute Event to Seamus Heaney last week. At Crumlin Park House, a gathering of like-minded people listened, read and shared memories and writings of Ireland's best-loved poet with MC Noelle Lynskey. Poet and scientist, Iggy Mc Govern who also hails from Northern Ireland, writer and broadcaster John Quinn who frequently interviewed Seamus, sculptor, John Behan who collaborated with the man and came to know him in his early days at writing and Des Kavanagh, a school friend and lifelong friend of Seamus Heaney added their personal touch to the event. Postcards personally sent to Des, recordings of the poet and a poetic letter to him in heaven wove into an evening of anecdotes as well as poems from the digging pen of the master read by members of the Moycullen Book Club, Baffle Loughrea and Portumna Pen Pushers. With delightful refreshments and a warm welcome from the hosts Maura, John, Kate and Eva- Marie Costello, the evening was indeed a fitting and memorable tribute.
