Health Centre Update
The Action Group for Portumna's Health Centre would like to thank all who sent letters, signed petitions and are making themselves heard about the absence of a Centre for the people of the area. With the doors of Portumna's HSE Health Centre closed for over 12 months, the group is holding their breath with news in that the HSE will be tendering for a suitable alternative location in the near future. As suitable, alternative locations offered by local people were previously turned down by the HSE, this change of heart by the HSE will be followed with local ears and eyes on the pulse. Mothers with babies, elderly in need of dressing clinics, women waiting on cervical smears and people with pride in Portumna, demand from your local and national politician and the HSE the basic provision of a functional, accessible health centre for our Public Health Nurse to operate from. The additional dental, speech and language and anxillary services will be a bonus. As the candidates for the election gather at your door, let them know how necessary this is for Portumna.

Shocking Story
Last weekend, the carcasses of 3 young ponies were dumped at the side of the road, between Derrew and Capira. Unwanted and nowhere to go. This is just the start and no solution on the horizon from the Dept of Agriculture. There's still 4 months of winter ahead of us. The animal/equine welfare organizations are full to capacity trying their best for these neglected animals as well as trying to meet the cost of fodder for them over the winter. Any horse welfare concerns should be directed to the County Council Vet Officer, or Simon Coveney and the Dept of Agriculture. It is believed that these ponies were dumped late last Friday/early Saturday morning.

Portumna GAA
There was no winner of last Sat nights lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 7 12 18 26. Two people matched three numbers. Jamie Conboy & Doreen Glynn. This weeks jackpot is worth €17,000.

Reminder this Friday eve at 6pm is the closing date for the Senior hurling Manager for 2014.

How Well do you Remember 2003?
Saddam Hussein is captured by U.S. forces after the invasion of Iraq. The space shuttle Columbia disintegrates over Texas upon reentry, killing all onboard. Concorde makes its last commercial flight. The Human Genome Project is successfully completed. Finding Nemo and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, are big hitters on the big screen.

Closer to home, Bertie Ahern is Taoiseach of a coalition Fianna Fail Progressive Democrat government. National unemployment stands at 4.6%. Nelson Mandela is among the dignitaries attending the opening of the Special Olympics in Croke Park. The Spire of Dublin on O'Connell Street is completed in this year. The most popular Irish baby names are Sean and Emma. In GAA, Kilkenny dispatched Cork in the All Ireland Hurling final, while Tyrone overcame Armagh in the football.

Even closer to home, Portumna hurlers do the double by winning the Galway and Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championships for the first time in their history. Portumna Community School marked the leaving of Mr Willie Burke (metalwork) and the retirements of Mr PB Ryan (English), and Mr Charlie Mullen (woodwork).

Ten years have come and gone since the class of 2003 graduated from Portumna Community School. It would be safe to say that a lot of the events mentioned above eluded many of the students at the time, as the spectre of the Leaving Cert loomed large. Gladly, for those that feel they may have missed out, and are interested in seeing how each other spent the intervening 10 years, the class of 2003 reunion will take place on Saturday the 28th of December. We have already been active on social media and have recruited many of the students in question.

We would like to extend the invite to any teachers (past or present) who would like to attend and to those students who may not be on Facebook. The venue on the night is O'Mearas, music by Tradstone and DJ Gavo, food and drinks promotions will be available on the night. Kick off from 9 o'clock. Tickets 15 euro – please contact Paul O'Hara (paohara@tcd.ie) or Stephanine Power (steph49842003@yahoo.com) or visit Facebook: Portumnacs Tenyear Reunion, for details of how to get your ticket.
